Casey Mecija explains how a childhood accident turned into a gift.

One of the reasons Casey Mecija makes such a good host of CBC Radio's The Doc Project is her warmth. She doesn't seem the least bit uncomfortable, with anybody. She's been on stage as the front woman for the band Ohbijou, she's made films and she's been a community organizer. All of these roles demand a lack of shyness.

But as it turns out, a childhood tumble helped nurture Casey's ability to make friends, start conversations and make people feel at ease. In this instalment of Storytellers, where artists tell us about pivotal moments from their creative lives, Casey tells of a chance meeting with a piece of furniture.

The Doc Project airs Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m.3:30 p.m. NT on CBC Radio One, and Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. on SiriusXM Channel 169.
