When mezzo-soprano Maria Campbell lost her voice, she turned to mixed media art. Tackling a topic she said fellow Prince Edward Islanders had a hard time talking about, her art became part of a movement that helped the province finally gain abortion access.

Disturbed that women had to leave the province for abortion access, P.E.I. artist Maria Campbell picked up some spray cans to start a broader conversation about the issue.

Calling herself a mixed media artist, she said her art pushed Islanders to think about a sex positive culture and talk about topics that were once taboo for many.

On March 31, the P.E.I. government announced it will provide abortion services on the Island for the first time in almost 35 years. In this short documentary directed by Campbell's childhood friend Jenna MacMillan and produced for CBC Arts by Stephanie Matteis, we discover the edgy art that helped change a province.
