Artist Jackie Traverse is creating a mixed-media mural
Winnipeg-based First Nations artist Jackie Traverse knows first-hand that life is not easy for the aboriginal community. "I'm outraged," she says, "My kids couldn't even stand at the bus stop without men thinking they're selling themselves."
Walking through her neighbourhood, she remembers her own hard times growing up in her family's one-room apartment, in an area where women have gone missing. But she's taking her mural-painting art to the streets of Winnipeg to send a message of hope for the future.
CBC Arts followed Traverse as she created her mixed-media mural of butterflies to symbolize the missing and murdered indigenous women; the message beneath reads "All Women are Sacred."
