Eve Hewson on Bad Sisters and the boom in Irish stories on screen
In a Q interview, the actor discusses her role in the acclaimed series Bad Sisters
As one of Bono and Ali Hewson's four children, Eve Hewson might be as close to Irish royalty as you can get. Rather than going into music, she's been carving out her own path as an actor since the late 2000s.
Some of her latest projects include the hit Netflix show The Perfect Couple and the Emmy-nominated Irish black comedy series Bad Sisters, which is back for Season 2.
Created by Sharon Horgan, Bad Sisters follows five sisters in present-day Dublin as they struggle to cover up a murder that they committed. But the story also explores the far-reaching effects of abuse, as the victim in their crime, known as "The Prick," was not a good person.
"We knew that we were going to tell a story about domestic abuse, but do it in a way that felt like it had many layers," Hewson tells Q's Tom Power in an interview. "In Ireland, it was particularly profound because Irish culture has sort of a whisper of like, don't speak out, don't say how you feel, particularly for women … and I think it kind of rung an alarm bell for women in the country to be like, 'I actually don't want to put up with this, and I do need to speak about it.'"
Between Bad Sisters and her 2023 film Flora and Son (which tells the story of an Irish single mom at war with her rebellious teenage son), the past few years have been big for Hewson when it comes to spotlighting Irish stories. In general, the last few years have seen a boom in Irish art on the world stage with people like author Sally Rooney and actor Paul Mescal rising to prominence.
"I've always thought that we were the smartest and the best at storytelling and the most charming and the best looking," Hewson jokes. "Glad that the world is finally catching up. But yeah, it does feel like there's this whole new kind of investment in our culture, which is a beautiful thing to be a part of."
