This year's Canadian Screen Award nominees are screening for free across the country

Between the livestream and the broadcast on CBC Television, watching the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards is easier than microwave KD, but we wish we could say the same about finding the films that are up for best picture.

Watching a Canadian movie at your local cinema is still a challenge, especially if you don't live across the street from Toronto's TIFF Lightbox. The Cineplex chain alone operates 1,655 screens in this country, but when Room opened in theatres last fall, only 4 cinemas — in all of North America — were showing the flick, a stat that seems even more bananas now that the drama's boasting an Oscar-winning performance from Brie Larson.

So, you might want to mark March 10 on your calendar.

On that day, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is hosting free movie screenings of the CSA's top nominees, with a different title playing in five cities from coast to coast: Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal and St. John's, Newfoundland. 

It's the first time the Academy's done it. To attend, you'll need to RSVP through their website, and PWYC donations will be accepted at each participating Cineplex theatre with proceeds benefiting local charities.
