Guy Maddin is a heavyweight, ranking at or near the top of any list of the most respected film directors Canada has ever produced. That's why it's refreshing — and a little endearing — to see him at the outset of his film career in this CBC report, broadcast on this day in 1986.

In the interview, a wry and self-deprecating Maddin talks about his then-current project, Gimli Saga (eventually released as Tales From the Gimli Hospital), and what it's like working as an amateur filmmaker with next-to-no budget.

"I really never know what I'm doing," he casually mentions in the interview. "I just aim the camera at something."

Maddin also expresses concern for having to return to his day job if the whole indie film director thing doesn't pan out: "I don't want to have to go back to work at the bank," he says. He probably doesn't have to worry about that any more.
