Carleigh Baker, Catherine Hernandez and Joshua Whitehead named to 2019 Journey Prize jury

The Writers' Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize has announced its 2019 jury: short story author Carleigh Baker, novelist Catherine Hernandez and poet and author Joshua Whitehead

The annual $10,000 award is given to the best in Canadian magazine-published short fiction. It is geared to new and developing writers during the early stages of their careers. The submission deadline for entry is Feb. 8, 2019.

Carleigh Baker is a Cree-Métis and Icelandic writer. She was a Journey Prize finalist in 2012 and her debut short story collection, Bad Endings, was a 2017 Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize finalist and won a 2017 Vancouver Book Award.

Catherine Hernandez is a Canadian writer, author and playwright. Her 2017 novel, Scarborough, was a shortlisted finalist for the 2017 Toronto Book Award, the 2018 Trillium Book Award, the 2018 Edmund White Award and was on the longlist for Canada Reads 2018.

Joshua Whitehead is an Oji-Cree, Two-Spirit writer, academic and poet from Peguis First Nation. His debut book of poetry, full-metal indigiqueer, is a collection of experimental poems that aim to provoke discussion and debate. His debut novel Jonny Appleseed was on the longlist for the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize.

The 2018 Writers' Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize winner was Shashi Bhat for her short story Mute. The 2019 winner will be announced at the Writers' Trust awards gala in November.
