The Breadwinner & The Handmaid's Tale receive Golden Globe nominations
The Breadwinner film received a Golden Globe nod, while award-magnet The Handmaid's Tale continued its streak with three nominations at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's big reveal Monday morning.
The Breadwinner, an animated film based on Canadian author Deborah Ellis' YA book, secured a spot on the best motion picture — animated list.
Originally published in 2000, The Breadwinner follows a girl named Parvana who disguises herself as a boy so she can earn money to support her family in Afghanistan. The film was co-produced by Angelina Jolie, directed by Nora Twomey and stars Saara Chaudry.
The Handmaid's Tale, a television series adapted from Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel, received three nominations including best television series — drama, and best performance nominations for actors Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd.
The show is set in a dystopian future where women are held hostage in a society engineered by a small group of powerful men. In September, the series won eight Emmys, including outstanding drama series and outstanding lead actress in a drama series for Elisabeth Moss.
Other book adaptations that earned Golden Globe nominations include Call Me By Your Name, Big Little Lies, Victoria & Abdul, All the Money in the World, Ferdinand, Molly's Game, Mudbound, First They Killed My Father, The Leisure Seeker, The Wizard of Lies, The Sinner, Thirteen Reasons Why, Game of Thrones, I Love Dick and Outlander.
