EDMONTON, AB—It's a lot of money, but it's worth it. And hopefully to him, as well.

Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid, the defending scoring champion and league MVP who is widely agreed to be the face of the future of hockey, has been retained by the team for the better part of the next decade. All they had to give him to do it was $12.5 million per season, with around two-thirds of that offered in compensation for having to live in the city of Edmonton.

"We don't want anyone to misconstrue this—we as a team love being in Edmonton," said a spokesperson for the club. "The Oilers franchise adores Edmonton. That's why we're not going anywhere for the foreseeable future, which led to this situation."

"This was a proactive move by us. We would never dare to ask Connor if we need to pay him extra to stay here. It would be insulting, outrageous, and preposterous. But you can definitely make an educated guess."

The spokesperson points out that the large bonus does not come without certain strings attached, as part of it must be used for travelling to surf, beach, and sushi-related destinations.

"Basically anything you can't do in Edmonton is what this is for. We didn't think it would turn out to be so much money, but it turns out there's a lot you can't do in Edmonton.

At press time, you should hear what they used to give Mark Messier.
