Learning English with CBC

UPDATE | November 25, 2020

Dear English Learners and Teachers,

In 2010 we launched Learning English with CBC to serve the needs of English as a Second Language learners in Alberta. We are delighted to see how this project has grown to provide free English lessons to thousands of learners in the past ten years.

In 2021, we will be launching a new way for ESL learners to learn English through a CBC/Radio-Canada initiative called MaurilLearning English with CBC will not be returning after the winter hiatus as we prepare for the launch of Mauril in 2021.

Mauril will be a new, free and ad-free digital project that will help users learn English and French. The lessons will use a wide range of interesting and entertaining content from CBC/Radio-Canada. It is designed to help learners improve oral comprehension and integrate language knowledge in everyday life.

The lessons will be available from basic to advanced levels, including interactive teaching tools to improve second-language comprehension and expression.

Mauril is named after the Honourable Mauril Bélanger—the former Ottawa-Vanier Member of Parliament who promoted Canada's official languages. Funded and endorsed by the Government of Canada, this new tool is designed and deployed by CBC/Radio-Canada, in collaboration with a committee of experts.

We hope you will take advantage of our new tool once it launches. If you would like to stay up to date on the official launch of Mauril, please send an email to learningenglish@cbc.ca.

On behalf of the Learning English with CBC team, we want to thank you for your support of this project over the past ten years.

Thank you,

The Learning English with CBC team

Welcome to Learning English with CBC; a joint project between CBC Edmonton and the Government of Alberta.

English language learners can practise and improve their language skills by watching the videos, listening to the audio and using the online quiz tools. The activities will help users to understand local issues and discuss topics in the news with neighbours, classmates and coworkers. The quiz tools will give learners instant feedback.

Every week, new video and audio content will be available at two levels. The videos are taken directly from the news while the audio are a little simpler and read at a slower pace. Stories are from all around Alberta and Canada.

Starting September 11, 2019 we are also including transcripts for both the audio and the video. This exciting addition will allow learners to check understanding, practise pronunciation, expand vocabulary, develop reading skills and enhance overall understanding of the story.

Learning English with CBC offers opportunities to practise:

  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Pronunciation
  • Spoken English comprehension
  • Reading

All of the past materials developed as part of the project will still be available on CBC Edmonton and CBC Calgary's sites.
