Most popular dog names of 2016
It's that time of the year again: 'tis the season for yearly roundups! Rover.com (essentially Airbnb for dogs) just released their list of the most popular dog names for 2016. For the fourth year in a row, human and food-themed names are the most popular, with names inspired by pop culture, alcohol, and politics rounding out the list.
The top trend this year was giving your fur baby a human name, with Bella and Max at the top of the list. It comes as no surprise that many of the top baby names of the year were among the most popular dog names, too.
Pop culture-inspired names were a big thing in 2016, with a whopping 75% of millennials naming their dogs after a movie, TV character, book, or celebrity. You can expect to meet a few Barb's (a la Stranger Things), Harry Potter's and Beyonce's at the dog park next year.
Junk food-inspired names like Taffy and Twix also saw a boost, up two percent from 2015. That said, healthier choices like Kale and Quinoa were popular names in Portland and Los Angeles for 2016, which sounds like a joke but it's 100% true.
2016 was also a big year for powerful women, and dog lovers noticed. Names like Coco Chanel, Eleanor Roosevelt, Beyonce, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg climbed over 13 percent in 2016.
