Scholarly finds that work for grown-ups, too

Who says you have to be a student to participate in the beloved annual ritual that is back-to-school shopping? Back-to-fall is for everyone — a "holiday season" in its own right. The coinciding arrivals of fall collections to stores and back-to-class promotions makes this time of year ideal for adding fresh finds to your autumn wardrobe.

So, whether your style inspiration this season is more Clueless or The Craft (or something else altogether), here are some fashionable picks that will make the end of summer transition just a little more enjoyable.

Book smart

A graphic tee that sends a positive message is always a good idea. Part of the proceeds from this one supports the Toronto Public Library, which is the largest public library system in North America.

Toronto Public Library Foundation I'm Library People Tee, $35, imlibrarypeople.ca/merch

Flower power

Part of Canadian retailer Simons' new seasonal pop-up with Finnish label Marimekko, this cotton floral backpack is as perfect for commuting as it would be for holding textbooks.

Marimekko Unikko Backpack, $195, simons.ca

Wide angle

Many of us probably remember wearing corduroy pants at one point in our youth. Well, they're back! This time around, try a wide-leg pair with block heels and a sheer blouse.

Babaton Cole Pant, $98, aritizia.com

Uniform flow

This pleated mini from French brand A.P.C. is a lot cuter than your standard Catholic-school uniform skirt, but just as preppy-chic. Style it with your favourite logo tee or, even better, an oversized mohair sweater for a very '90s-inspired look.

A.P.C. Ella Skirt, $405.94, shopbop.com

Sock hop

Cute socks are an often-overlooked accessory. In reality, having on-trend hosiery can help you complete a look, especially when paired with the right shoes. These socks, from a German company founded in 1895, would instantly elevate any old sneaker.

Falke Crane Cotton-Blend Flight Socks, about $20.50, selfridges.com

Red zone

New jeans are an essential part of any back-to-school haul. These red, cropped Levi's are way cooler than anything called "mom jeans" has the right to be.

Levi's Mom Jeans, $118, levi.com

Preppy handbook

The retro feel and modern fit of this polo makes it perfect for right now. And, who doesn't feel like channeling their inner Prep once in a while?

Lacoste Live Boxy Fit Leopard Print Cotton Interlock Polo, $165, lacoste.com

Varsity spirit

If a classic denim jacket has been your summer go-to, then a smart leather-and-wool varsity bomber needs to be in your fall rotation, whether or not you were ever into team sports.

Opening Ceremony Grey OC Varsity Jacket, $495, ssense.com

Collar stays

Main character Lara Jean's sweet '90s wardrobe in the recent Netflix teen rom-com To All The Boys I've Loved Before is making us reconsider floaty blouses and peter pan collars. This top from Uniqlo's collection with Ines de la Fressange certainly fits the bill.

Uniqlo Women Georgette Tuck Long Sleeve Blouse, $39.90, uniqlo.com

French connection

There's something about the back-to-school fashion ritual that inspires many of us to try new trends and take sartorial risks, as if a new outfit might change everything. In that spirit, why not try wearing a beret again? Even if it didn't work out before, you never know what might happen now.

H&M Wool Beret, $14.99, hm.com
