Whether you're returning to the workplace for the first time in a while or looking for an opportunity to spruce up your look for fall, you may find yourself standing in front of your mirror wondering what to wear. Perhaps you're reluctant to leave sweatpants behind, or maybe you're excited to dress up again. Either way, you may be tempted to run out to the mall to refresh your wardrobe — but I'd suggest shopping in your own closet first.

Something as unassuming as a white button-down shirt can be reinvented with simple twists, making it a wardrobe hero. I'll show you three easy ways to create different looks with a classic shirt for work.

Fashionable formality

Here, I've started by pairing a basic long-sleeve button-down collared shirt with black straight-leg trousers, a belt and loafers. Adding a vest to this look can be both functional and fashionable since it provides a layer of warmth and acts as a visual break for the eye. The key to the styling here is to ensure the collar is pulled out to create contrast. For a formal look, tuck in the shirt. For a casual look, pull the hem out, making sure a hint of buckle is showing. I recommend choosing a dark coloured knit because it looks sharp against white.

Wide open

Need something that works for your plans after work? Start with the same foundational pieces — shirt and trousers — but leave your button-down unbuttoned. It's a relaxed look, but still work-appropriate as long as the tee underneath has had a good steam. If you need the outfit to look slightly more polished, add a belt.

Double take

This last trick might not be unexpected, but it's still classy and certainly eye-catching. Layering another shirt on top of a white one adds complexity to an otherwise traditional outfit. Pulling the cuffs of the top shirt back to expose the white cuffs beneath elevates the entire outfit. This is an edgy look that gets a little more attention, so be prepared to be stopped to chat about it.
