3 easy hair trends we're trying on this fall
Watch Kristjan demonstrate these easy styles in today's full episode!
Hair styles, like fashion trends, go in and out of favour. So, if you're still rocking "The Rachel", it might be time to experiment with a new look. Not sure where to start? Well, stop searching. We brought in hair whisperer Kristjan Hayden to break down the trends that celebs and stylists are all about this season. Plus, they're easy enough that you can do them yourself — without breaking a sweat.
Vintage wave
This retro look, also known as the S-Wave, has been popping up everywhere, and is a favourite of celebrities like Rachel McAdams. Essentially, you part your hair to the side and brush out your curls for an old-Hollywood vibe. The most important rule for this style? You don't need to do your entire head of hair.
Directions:
1. Isolate a section of hair at the front, and curl it using a curling rod, wrapping the hair backwards, away from the face. The bigger the size, the looser the curl is going to be.
2. Brush out the curls.
3. Pin the hair just above and behind your ear. For a relaxed look, pin it low. When pinning, keep the pin closed to give you a stronger hold.
4. Finish off with hairspray
Tips to keep in mind:
- Looks best with a side part
- Try hairspraying the pin, before pinning your hair. It'll give more grip and a better hold
- Don't hairspray before curling, only after. Spraying beforehand bakes the hairspray into the hair, making it crunchy and hard to work with.
Crimped hair
From chokers to slip dresses, everything 90s is new again — and hair is no exception. With texture being majorly on trend, a lot of girls are embracing their waves and curls. One way to do that? Crimping. Here are some tips for achieving a subtle, modern take on the trend, without looking like Topanga from Boy Meets World.
Directions:
1. Heat up your crimping iron.
2. Isolate sections of the hair from the inside, NOT the top layer. This will help you get some texture, without going over the top.
3. Crimp a small section, leaving the ends a little straighter.
Tips to keep in mind:
- Take sections of the hair from the bottom, to get just a little bit of crimp peaking through as a nice nod to the trend.
Hair knot
This one is so easy, your husband can do it! Seriously — we had one hubby from our studio audience test it out, and he did it all in just 30 seconds! The knot is the same shape as a bun, but it gives off a cooler, more relaxed look.
Directions:
1. Pull hair into a ponytail and spray with hairspray to make it easy to work with, and not so slippery.
2. Tie the hair into a knot, but don't pull the hair all the way through.
3. Place hair against the head and pin into place.
