Cabin-chic: An It-Girl's guide to cottage gear

First score the weekend invite, then score all of these.

First score the weekend invite, then score all of these.

Nothing beats making a new friend that makes you feel like a stand up comedian, has cable for The Bachelor viewing purposes, and then one day casually drops that they happen to have a cottage.

So you scored yourself an invite - now all you need is a solid playlist and a few Instagram-worthy outfits and accessories. Whether you're chilling dockside or getting cozy by the fire, we've made a (short) list of our favourite cottage finds so you're not the girl that packed for a two week Euro trip.

The Tank

Canada is old AF, so celebrate the sesquicentennial (try saying that after a few beers) by wearing this cute, camp-inspired tank by the company that does Canada better than anyone, Roots.

Summer Cabin Tank Top, $30, www.roots.com

The Trouser

Keep cozy as the sun goes down in sweatpants that don't make you look like an unemployed mess. These cool camo joggers by Aritzia's brand TNA won't get (visibly) dirty, they're on sale, and added bonus - they come in a short.

TNA Alix Pant, $80, www.aritzia.com

The Tote

You may be outside of the city, but that doesn't mean you can't still support your team. Carry all your necessities in this limited edition Dooney & Burke MLB tote and still look tote-ally cute.

Dooney & Burke MLB Blue Jays Shopper, $217, www.dooney.com

The Two-Piece

If there's one thing I've learned as an adult woman, it's that wearing something little actually costs a lot. So if you're going to buy a bathing suit, make sure it's a classic cut and colour because they're friggin' expensive. This basic black Billabong bikini available at Sporting Life is giving me life.

Billabong Line Up Tank Bikini Top, $58, www.sportinglife.ca

If you're more of a one piece gal you can't go wrong with a suit by Solid & Striped, the brand for bathing beauties (aka Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid). "The Claudia" is giving us major it-girl vibes.

Solid and Striped "The Claudia" Swimsuit, $210, www.ssense.com

The Tech

Were you ever really at a cottage if there aren't pics of you and your squad on swan-shaped floaties? Do like Taylor Swift and capture all your memories on an instant camera - and then take a picture of those pictures, add a flattering filter, and post them on Instagram, obviously. This one by Fujifilm is petite and pink.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera, $93, www.urbanoutfitters.ca

Sunshine, water, and an extra cold beer...heaven is a place in Muskoka, but there's one thing missing -  the tunes, bro! Keep the fun flowing with this feature heavy speaker, but we beg you, please no Dave Matthews.

Sony Splashproof Bluetooth Wireless Speaker, $89.99, www.bestbuy.ca

The Toes

One of the best parts about cottage "lyfe" is the unpredictable terrain. Okay fine, it's maybe not the best part, but nature is a wonderful beast. Basically what I'm trying to say is: one minute you're in the water and the next minute you're in a forest, so you need shoes that are versatile. And because I will never back the fashion Croc, I'm all about the Native because they're waterproof, attractive, AND Canadian!

Native Jefferson in Shell White, $64.99, www.getoutsideshoes.com

The Towel

If there was ever an award for the world's most stylish towel, this cottage classic by HBC would definitely take the cake. And besides, if something's going to be heavily featured in your snap story, you might as well make it cute.

Hudson's Bay Company Luxe Beach Towel, $30, www.thebay.com

The Topper

Getting that perfectly even sun-kissed glow is the dream, in other words, a splotchy burn will 10/10 harsh your mellow. Have it made in the shade with this straw hat by J.Crew that retains its shape no matter how poorly you pack.

Wide-Brim Packable Straw Hat, $72, www.jcrew.com

The Tee

Get a t-shirt that's both conscious and cool. When you buy this trendy tee from the Drake General Store, 25% of all proceeds go to Planned Parenthood.

Otherwild The Future is Female Tee, $58, www.drakegeneralstore.ca

The Toy

Literally nothing makes me happier than seeing a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tubeman dancing on the side of the road, so why not get one that you can lay on? It's the new swan, calling it now.

BigMouth Wacky Waving Pool Float, $26.15, www.amazon.ca

Now stop reading and go out and enjoy the few months that make up a Canadian summer!
