Cutting an old pair of jeans into shorts is a classic summer move, but it's far from the only way to repurpose your denim for the warmer months. Case in point: this surprisingly-simple project from Sewing Therapy's Sara SJ Kim that's perfect for the season.

In this episode of her CBC Life series Sewing School, Sara demonstrates how to transform any pair of jeans into an on-trend denim maxi skirt with high slits in the front and back. She'll show you how to properly unpick the seams, achieve your ideal skirt shape and add optional fabric inserts.

  • A sewing machine
  • String, in colours of your choice
  • An old pair of jeans
  • Fabric shears
  • Pins or fabric tape
  • Fabric marker
  • Seam ripper

  • Serger seam ripper (optional)
  • Pinking shears (optional)
