The top NYFW Fall 2017 beauty trends
On the fringe
After seasons of long, beachy hair, stylists are adding interest once again. Which means bangs are having a moment. Whether they are choppy, like at Tory Burch, Mica Arganaraz's curly version at Alexander Wang, or Ina Maribo Jensen's blunt and eye skimming look at Proenza Schouler, fringe is back. Bangs were also spotted at Philipp Plein, Eckhaus Latta, Rosie Assoulin, Monse, Maryam Nassir Zadeh and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Snip snip, ladies.
Bare minimum
Perhaps seeing how glowing and gorgeous Alicia Keys looks sans makeup these passed few months has inspired makeup artists backstage to focus on each model's natural beauty. At Elizabeth and James, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Sies Marjan, Diane von Furstenberg, Tanya Taylor, Michael Kors and Narcisco Rodriguez, minimal was all the rage. Some added false eyelashes for a little definition (Sies Marjan), while other stuck to shades of brown on the eyes (Narcisco Rodriguez), or barely-there bronzer on the cheeks (Michael Kors). But with each look, brows were a major focal point—though steered away from the Insta-brow look of 2015-2016, and into a more natural, full shape.
Colour wheel
While a bare-ish face was major, so was adding an artful pop of colour on the eyes—quite surprising for a fall season. At Oscar de la Renta, makeup artist Tom Pecheux created an orange-to-pink sunset eye on some models, while using hits of purple and baby blue on others. Canadian designer and now American resident, Chris Gelinas, also used orange on the eye, this time accompanied by a black cat-eye flick. And at Prabal Gurung, M.A.C's Diane Kendal created green geometric shapes using the lid as a canvas.
Boy meets girl
The trend towards individualism has led to many boy-ish cuts on the runway, and we couldn't be happier! Nina Milner's blonde chop and Catherine McNeil's brunette messy bowl cut were the perfect contrasts at Alexander Wang, while models at Monse sported every spectrum of cropped hair, like Lina Hoss' very Mia Farrow look, Jordana Phillips' cropped natural afro and Sohyun Jung's buzz cut. Another highlight was at Brandon Maxwell, where model Isabella Emmack sported a wet look version. #shorthairdontcare
Ethereal eyes
For many seasons now, artists have stayed away from the inner corner of the eye and that could be why it feels so fresh right now. A metallic, white or gloss was applied to the inner corners of the eye at Proenza Schouler, Calvin Klein (this was Raf Simons' debut for the label, and this trend was most prominent on model Julia Nobis' creamy pale complexion), Victoria Beckham (here brows were done, but not overdone, with a wet glisten on the inner corners) and Delpozo (highlighter accompanied by a hit of orange on the eyelid, making this two trends in one).
Micro trends: Imperfect lips, sleek Ponytails
Also making small but impactful statements were imperfect red lips seen at Rosie Assoulin and Public School, where Maybelline New York's Grace Lee deftly applied, then blotted lips to perfect. And sleek, wet-look ponytails were trailing behind models at The Row, Philipp Plein and Oscar de la Renta.
