What to give the women in your life for International Women's Day
International Women's Day is March 8th and this year's theme is #BeBoldForChange, urging us to "Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world — a more inclusive, gender equal world."
As a start, here are some suggestions for things you may want to give the women in your life to help inspire and empower them and to simply show your appreciation.
Your daughter
Remind your daughter — or any young girl in your life — that she can change the world, with Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World ($9.24). From Hypatia to Marie Curie, this New York Times bestseller chronicles the work of 50 women who made great contributions to the world in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, reminding her that she could be the one to make the next great breakthrough. Rachel Ignotofsky also wrote and illustrated Women in Sports: 50 Fearless Athlete Who Played to Win, which is currently available for pre-order.
We also suggest Bad Girls Throughout History — full of real-life female pirates, activists, warriors and more — and the Boss Babes colouring and activity book ($8.39). Because there are so many true stories that are far more incredible than any fairy tale.
A woman you admire
If you admire her, then it's time to let her know. Give the mentor, survivor, motivator, teacher or any boss babe in your life a token celebrating her awesomeness. We like this Boss Lady Enamel Lapel Pin ($11.84) because we know so many women who deserve to wear it.
Your significant other
The Equality Rose Iron-on Patch ($8.00) by Montreal-based Stay Home Club is the right kind of rose to ask a woman to accept. Stay Home Club partnered with Planting Peace to create a collection in support of their Equality House, which is painted in the colours of the Pride flag and is situated in Topeka, Kansas, directly across from the Westboro Baptist Church hate group. 100% of the profits from the pin are donated to Planting Peace in support of LGBTQ rights advocacy.
The RIP Patriarchy Tee from Modern Women ($30.00) shows her you're down with equality. In fact, anything from their line would make a powerful and stylish statement for either of you to wear, since their apparel is unisex.
Your best friends
We're big fans of Toronto-based writer Erin Klassen's book You Care Too Much ($28.00 via Etsy) which invited 17 female artists and writers to explore the true meaning and practice of self-love. The book is blend of poetry, fiction, confessional writing, art and photography that is sure to kindle thoughts and ideas for you and your favourite females to consider and discuss, not to mention the act of taking a time out to read is an act of self-love in itself.
With it's complicated history, the female orgasm could still do with some equalizing in many bedrooms, which is why you might want to gift your bestie with one of the best G-spot vibrators on the market, the INA Wave by Lelo ($199). It's not cheap, but its shape and vibrating motions (which you can set to a variety of strengths and speeds) make it worth. And if you're a woman who hasn't tried one of these yet, then it's time to gift yourself something as well, as the benefits of orgasming are many.
