5 budget-friendly hacks to try ASAP if you wear glasses
How to keep your specs in place, get them clean, and finally stop them from fogging up.
We're willing to bet that 100% of glasses wearers out there encounter fogged up, scratched and smudged lenses on a regular basis. And although eye glasses are a very trendy — and useful — accessory, we could all benefit from some secrets to make wearing them a little less annoying. Thankfully for us, the hosts of The Goods adore a good set of hacks, so they shared five simple, budget-friendly ideas to help your glasses last for years to come and make life through lenses a little clearer.
Budget-friendly cleaner
A lot of people spend money on fancy eyeglass cleaners or wipes, but believe it or not, you can simply use some dish soap to wash your glasses. It's gentle enough to do the trick and a little more budget-friendly.
Here's what you need:
- Bowl of lukewarm water
- Dish soap
- Microfibre cloth
Here's how to do it:
1. Dip your glasses into lukewarm water.
2. Put in a little dish soap and wash your glasses with your fingers.
3. Once you've washed the soap away, dry the lenses with a microfibre cloth and you're good to go. Avoid dish towels and paper towel to dry glasses off because they can scratch your lenses.
And as a rule of thumb, never put something on your lenses that you wouldn't put on your skin. So that means no window cleaner, all purpose cleaners, disinfecting wipes etc. These chemicals strip away the protective coatings on your glasses.
Cleaning your lenses this way is also hygienic because you're washing away all of the dead skin cells, make up, hair products and dirt from the hinges and nose pads, that you wouldn't get clean if you just cleaned the lenses with store bought cleaner.
Cleaning cloth/tie combo
Lots of glasses wearers get lazy and skip the microfibre cloth in favour of a quick wipe of the lenses on a sleeve, pant leg — or even their ties. This is a huge mistake though, because your clothes are likely filled with dust that can scratch the lenses. We know that sometimes you really need to clean your glasses and you don't have the proper cloth around, so to avoid scratches in style, try this hack.
Here's what you'll need:
- A small microfibre cloth
- Double sided tape
- Scissors
Here's how to do it:
1. Cut the microfibre cloth to your desired size.
2. Apply a piece of double sided tape to the cloth.
3. Stick it to the inside of a shirt, jacket, or even your tie for a clean that's always close at hand.
Glow in the dark glasses case
Pretty much everyone wakes up without their glasses on, which can sometimes mean stumbling around in the dark desperately searching for them because you can't see anything. But you can combat this issue with a simple tool — glow in the dark stickers! You can find them at most craft or toy stores, plus they're fun!
Here's what you'll need:
- Glasses case
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Glow in the dark stickers
Here's how to do it:
1. Apply the stickers to the case with hot glue to ensure a permanent hold.
2. Let dry.
3. Charge it up in light for a few minutes and then try it out in a dark room.
Primer for slippery glasses
People who wear makeup and glasses might find that foundations and concealers can create a slippery surface on their nose that makes glasses slide down. To combat this annoyance, try dabbing a little bit of your eye shadow primer on the bridge of your nose.
Eye shadow primer is meant to create a tacky base that holds your eyeshadow in place, and the same concept works here — the primer on your nose creates a matte, invisible texture that will keep your glasses from sliding down. Easy!
Soap for foggy lenses
You know when you're cooking over a hot stove and your glasses keep fogging up from condensation? That could create a kitchen disaster, so here's a trick to stop this from happening.
Here's what you'll need:
- Plain white bar soap
- Damp microfibre cloth
Here's how to do it:
1. Rub a little bit of plain white bar soap directly onto the lenses.
2. Massage it into the lenses, then wipe it off with a damp cloth and your glasses won't fog up anymore. This works because the soap creates a protective film on the glass that keeps it from fogging.
