Create on-trend pop art for your walls in a snap
Steven Sabados shows how to turn string, nails and wood into a daring DIY statement piece
Chances are, you've seen string art popping up everywhere you source your DIYs and there's definitely a reason for its newfound popularity. This DIY is particularly great because it only involves a few materials, it can be done in just a few steps and it's a lot of fun to make. Plus, it's completely customizable to fit with your decor and tastes. Steven Sabados showed us how to make this on-trend art at home — here's how!
What you'll need:
- Plywood board or other soft wood large enough to fit your chosen design
- Finishing nails
- Hammer
- Printed image
- Paint (optional)
- Various colours of embroidery floss
Directions:
1. Start with an image about the same size as your board. You can draw it yourself or print it off. It's best to select a bold shape and avoid intricate details.
2. Paint the background of your board. Pick a colour that will allow your string art to pop.
3. Place your print on the board and add nails along the edge of your image leaving roughly a quarter inch between nails. When you're finished, rip the paper image guide off of the board.
4. Now for string part! Using embroidery thread, start to create your image. Tie a piece of string to a nail, and then start wrapping. Aim for a direction that makes sense with your image. When you want to switch colours or run out of thread, tie the string to another nail and then cut the excess.
For this design, Steven started with the mouth and created the teeth using the white string. Next, he created the outline using black string. He then moved onto the lips and covered up the white string at the top of the teeth with red string, since he used the same pins for both parts of the design.
Use different colours to get depth, shade and shadow in your work, such as the pink string layered over the red. Continue wrapping and winding the string until your image stands out to your liking. Decorate the rest of the board with paint or decoration, and voila! Simple string art with a big impact.
