Styling a fun and whimsical kids' playroom
What's not to love about a playroom with pops of colour, ample space for creativity and most importantly – a homemade fort? Here are helpful tips on how to make a fun and whimsical playroom that encourages creativity but keep the mess to a minimum.
DIY forts
A playroom isn't complete without a fort. Don't worry, you no longer have to pull down your living room draperies or pull apart your sofa! Steven showed us how to make a DIY fort for kids.
For the skeleton, use 1 x 2 strapping, drill a hole in the middle and then add a threaded rod down the middle. Use nuts to tighten it up and then whitewash the wood. Add rope to the front and back posts to keep the tent upright. We used Astroturf for the base and ready-made drapes for the sides. To make things quick and easy, use 2 lengths of drapery panels with grommets. For some extra detail, we doubled up each panel with a solid color on the inside and pattern on the outside!
Colouring book wallpaper
In this room, children are allowed to colour on the wall. We love this Graham & Brown colouring book wallpaper. It's the perfect way to display kids' artwork – trust us when we say that the kids will love to colour this wallpaper!
Art station
We love an art station that encourages kids to be creative but contains all the clutter and mess! To create this, we added a towel bar to the art table so that the kids can unroll the white paper. It also means no more pieces of scrap paper everywhere! This roll of paper from Ikea is the perfect addition to a playroom because it can be pulled out for drawing time or rolled back up when not in use.
Mini designer furniture & bean bags
You don't need to sacrifice style when it comes to kids' furniture. This mini egg chair from Kids at Home may be small, but it has some big design personality!
When furnishing your kids' playroom, skip the fussy sofa. Instead, opt for giant bean bags like these ones from Kids at Home – they're comfy and are sure to be a hit with the kids!
Toy station
Storage in a play room is super important to keep it from always looking chaotic and cluttered. The space should encourage kids to play and be creative, but they should also be able to clean up after themselves when they're done. To achieve this, include toy storage that is accessible to kids and at their level – such as this storage unit from Ikea.
Practical flooring
A playroom is a great space to have fun with colourful flooring. This Kalora rug from Kids at Home is the perfect addition to the playroom floor for playtime.
The playroom is also a place for creativity, which means that messes are sure to happen. Removable carpet tiles are the perfect solution because if one tile gets dirty, it can easily be removed and replaced!
