Everyone knows that a good accessory can completely transform an outfit, and what better way to make a statement than with a standout piece of jewelry. Statement jewelry is definitely having a moment right now, and the best part is that you may already own some of the pieces needed to style this trend into your daily wardrobe. From symbols to pearls, and old-school glam to mismatched cool, there's a lot of trends to choose from this season so stylist Casey Tuninga stopped by The Goods to share her picks for how to make them your own.

Signs and symbols

This look is all about opting for pieces that you're drawn to, whether they feature your astrological sign, your birthstone, or a symbol that has meaning to you. It's all about personal connection with this trend – select pieces that speak to you. This look is super versatile because you can take it from very minimal to complete statement piece depending on how you style and layer the pieces.

These accessories are statements on their own but by layering a couple of them at a time you can easily make your accessories a statement – pair different lengths of necklaces to create an eclectic mix of stones, symbols and gems. Online retailers that showcase hand-crafted items from artisans, such as Etsy, would be the best place to find your special arsenal of powerful jewelry, or check out a trendy boutique in your neighbourhood.

Chandelier earrings are the ideal way to really make a statement with your jewelry. As a take on classic glam, this look pays homage to old Hollywood – but it's not just for the red carpet. You can totally rock these earrings as a day look too.

These pieces will add instant glam to any outfit, so all you need is a little black dress to complete the look. Opt for sparkle, and hanging details, and be sure to always pick a size that you feel comfortable with. Just remember that the bigger the jewelry, the bigger the statement.

Layering pearls

Pearls have been on-trend for ages, and are timeless pieces of jewelry. Although this trend may borrow from grandma's style, it's definitely a look of its own. Pearls are also a super accessible trend because you don't have to own real pearls to make this look happen – vintage, second hand, hand me downs, they're easy to come by.

Real pearls mixed with imitation ones look just as good as the real deal. The key is to look for the same tones and shades of pearl when layering. Use a base set of pearls and just layer layer layer until you're satisfied. Play with different lengths to create a great texture. You can easily pair this look with a simple black t-shirt and jeans or a blazer, white dress shirt and a wide leg pant for a great daytime look, or of course, an evening dress for the perfect night out.

This trend is showing some true staying power – not to mention it's very convenient for those of us who have lost the matching earring to various studs, chandeliers, hoops and everything else in our jewelry box. Now you've got an excuse to wear all of those lone earrings you've been holding onto.

You can wear a diamond stud in one ear and a chandelier-style earring in the other, or do a mix of studs and an ear cuff. Look through your own collection and try a bunch of variations. Don't be afraid to play with this look – think about pairing earrings with other sets. It's all about your personality.
