Give wilting blooms new life by turning them into the prettiest pressed flower wall art
A crafty DIY to make that meaningful bouquet last forever
Flowers can be a beautiful way to brighten a household, especially if they're serving as a keepsake from a notable event: a congratulatory gift for that promotion, a birthday present or just a Because-It's-Wednesday bouquet from the farmer's market. Sadly, no one likes to watch their gorgeous blooms wither, so preserve your blossoms in this beautiful glass collage to enjoy them all year long! Not only will this project look fab hung up on your walls, it can make for a really pretty gift for someone you love, too. Just make sure to do the first few steps far in advance — the flowers will take about four weeks to press perfectly before you can start assembling.
Here's what you need:
- An assortment of flowers
- Wax paper
- Scissors
- Large hardcover book
- 2 acrylic sheets: 13" x 19", at ⅛" width
- Masking tape
- Ruler
- Drill with a ¼" bit
- Clear glue tape
- ¼" standoff wall mounts
Here's how to do it:
To start, use your scissors to trim down the stems of your flowers, keeping the blossoms intact.
Arrange some flowers on one side of the wax paper. Fold the wax paper in half, so that it's covering the flowers. Repeat for the other flowers.
Place the flowers and wax paper inside your hardcover book. Place something heavy on top to weigh it down, such as a paperweight or vase. Now…wait 4 weeks. (I know, I know…but physics can't be rushed.) Once that's up, carefully remove the flowers from the book.
Remove the backing off the acrylic sheets. Place masking tape on all four corners of the sheet.
Use a ruler to mark on the masking tape 1" in and 1" up the edge. Drill a hole at the points you've marked on the corners of the sheet. Remove the masking tape. Repeat this process for the other acrylic sheet.
Arrange your pressed flowers onto the sheet. Use the clear glue tape to secure them in place. Be delicate – they're fragile.
Place the 2nd acrylic sheet on top. Use masking tape to temporarily secure the two sheets together. Screw the wall mounts into the corner holes. Remove the masking tape.
Measure the space where you need to drill to mount the frame to the wall, and screw in the back parts of the wall mounts onto the wall. Then mount the acrylic and screw in the frame with the other side of the mount.
Now hang and marvel! A perfectly elegant, rustic way to add a touch of nature to your home, and a great way to preserve that special bouquet for a long time to come!
