Is sex painful for you? A nurse explains three possible culprits
It's more common than you may think, and the good news is, there may be a solution waiting for you.
If painful sex (dyspareunia) is keeping you from enjoying intimacy as often as you might like, you're not alone. According to a study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, nearly one in ten women reported symptoms of painful sex, experienced in varying ways. It is sometimes described as a deep, sharp pain, a burning sensation, or a throbbing pain that goes on for hours after intercourse. While most often caused by spasms, latex allergies, awkward positions or mismatched genitals, there are other suspects as well. The good news is, treatment often lessens or eliminates the problem and that means not only a better sex life but improved emotional intimacy and self-image.
We know it may be difficult to talk to your healthcare provider about painful sex so we asked Nurse Jake Mossop to help us get comfortable with the root of our discomfort.
