Yas Queen! Her Majesty gives us an LGBTQ shoutout just in time for pride

Britain's OQ (Original Qween) is cutting through some serious chaos to lend her voice to the gay community.

Addressing what's sure to be a hung parliament (insert joke here), Elizabeth II made a point of prioritizing LGBTQ rights in the UK this week:

"My government will make further progress to tackle the gender pay gap and discrimination against people on the basis of their race, faith, gender, disability or sexual orientation."

The Queen is 91 years old and has sat on the throne for 64 years.  While gay rights may not have been front of mind for her back in the 50s she has changed with the times. Palace staffers pushed back hard against reports she was opposed to gay marriage back in 2014 and in 2015 she seemed tickled pink to give royal assent to marriage equality in the UK saying: ""Who'd have thought 62 years ago when I came to the throne, I'd be signing something like this? Isn't it wonderful?"

You'll have to forgive Liz for taking some time to come around… Anglican church and all.  But this particular shout-out feels like something special because of all the noise surrounding it. Let's be honest, the UK is a hot mess these days: Brexit, Manchester, the London bridge attacks, the Grenfell fire… not to mention Theresa May's disastrous snap election. There is so much happening in her country that it would be easy to overlook a minority group but even her bae Prince Phillip's last minute hospitalization with an infection couldn't stop her appearance.  And there's more than meets the eye in this brief statement.

In Britain's snap election Theresa May was left with a minority which means forming a coalition is her only chance of having a functioning government. The logical strategic ally for this pummelled PM is the Democratic Unionist party of Northern Ireland. Here are a few political positions from the Democratic Unionist party of Northern Ireland.

  • Anti-Marriage
  • Anti Abortion
  • Don't believe climate change is influenced by humans

The son of the Party's founder Ian Paisley Jr. once called homosexuality "immoral, offensive and obnoxious" adding he's "repulsed" by gays and lesbians". Members of that party were in the room when she let her rainbow flag fly and I'm willing to bet she threw some cut-eye their way as she delivered that sentence.

The other moment that had me taking a knee to my $20 bill? Her exclusion of Donald Trump, a man with one of the most anti-LGBTQ cabinets in modern history. It's standard protocol for the Queen to announce state visitors in this address and while she did announce that the the Spanish royal family would be stopping by, there was no mention of a Trump state visit. According to ABC News an official invitation was extended to Trump which makes the snub all the more curious/delightful to LGBTQ people and their allies. I see what you're doing Elizabeth you sly royal rascal, and in your honour I'm giving you a special Pride tribute: Elizabethan Fashion Edition. Yas Queen!
