Cadence Weapon updates Edmonton Oilers anthem ahead of team's return to Stanley Cup final
‘Time for another title,’ the Alberta-born rapper proclaims on 'Connor McDavid (2024 Stanley Cup Version)'
In 2017, Cadence Weapon released "Connor McDavid," a track celebrating the Edmonton Oilers clinching their first playoff berth in a decade. On the triumphant, horn-laden anthem, named after the NHL team's captain, the Polaris Music Prize-winning rapper (born Rollie Pemberton) rapped: "Let's bring it back to the '80s/ we was doing it bigger/ five rings on my finger," nodding to the number of championships the Oilers have won.
"I felt the energy when I was in Edmonton over the holidays and it was like a fever pitch," Pemberton told CBC Edmonton when he first put the track out seven years ago. "People were going so crazy about Connor McDavid and the Oilers and I wanted to harness that energy in a song."

Now, as the Oilers head into the Stanley Cup final this Saturday — their first finals appearance since 2006 — Pemberton has dropped an updated version of "Connor McDavid." The newly released "Connor McDavid (2024 Stanley Cup Version)" is available on all streaming platforms, and includes an updated roster of players mentioned, in addition to a polished-up mix and a slightly altered beat. The song concludes with Pemberton proclaiming: "18 years at the final/ remix, time for another title."
In a new interview with CBC Edmonton, Pemberton noted that this was "the fastest I've turned around anything in my entire career." He added: "I think if they win, I definitely want to be a part of the parade. I gotta play the song at the parade for sure."
