There are more prizes than ever available to win for this year's Canadian Music Class Challenge

We've increased the number of prizes for the 2019 Canadian Music Class Challenge, and have included several new and exciting prize categories. (Shutterstock)

Here at CBC Music, many of our producers, hosts and executives are parents with kids in music programs. We realize firsthand how expensive musical instruments can be, especially when budgets both at home and at school can be tighter than a snare drum.

That's why, with the help of our partners at MusiCounts, we've increased the number of prizes for the 2019 Canadian Music Class Challenge to address these current hurdles in the music classroom, and have included several new and exciting prize categories.

Let's break down the winnings this year:

  • MusiCounts Passion Prize: one grand prize of $5,000 in new musical instruments (or repairs) will be awarded to the music class showing the most passion while performing their song, as chosen by our partners at MusiCounts.
  • Eight first-place prizes of $3,000 in new musical instruments (or repairs) will go to the top eight classes in each age category, as chosen by our judges, plus a gold-record plaque for the classroom or trophy case.
  • The second- and third-place winners in each age category will also receive a gold-record plaque.
  • Indigenous Languages "Human" Prize: $1,000 in new musical instruments will be awarded for the best performance of the song "Human" by Twin Flames, as judged by Twin Flames. 
  • Top community music program: $1,000 in new musical instruments will be awarded to the best music class from a community program, outside of a regular school curriculum, as chosen by our judges.
  • If your class chooses to perform "Shine," the official anthem of the Canadian Paralympic Team, your video could be shown during the CBC coverage of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo 2020. 
  • Early bird prizes: your music class could win one of three Marshall Bluetooth speakers for the classroom if you register your class between Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, and Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019.

And if you miss out on one of the prizes, you can still register for Band Aid, a MusiCounts program that provides new music instruments for schools and classes in need. The 2019 program starts in September.
