Jessie Reyez is 'Beyoncé approved' on new Lion King-inspired song
The newly Polaris shortlisted artist teamed up with rapper 070 Shake for ‘Scar'
Beyoncé released The Lion King: The Gift today, a companion album she produced for the highly anticipated live-action Disney film, also out today.
With names like Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Jay Z and, of course, Blue Ivy Carter gracing the tracklist, we were happy to notice a Canadian name sticking out: Jessie Reyez.
"Beyoncé approved," Reyez posted on Instagram earlier this week, when the tracklist was announced. When the song came out, though, she was less subdued about her feelings.
"Beyoncé and Lion King are synonymous with my childhood," Reyez posted on Instagram this morning. "I'm on a f--king trip."
The newly Polaris shortlisted artist teamed up with singer and rapper 070 Shake for "Scar," the 25th track on an album of 27, and it sounds like a (defensive) apology from the film's easy-to-hate villain. Reyez raps one fiery verse, the urgency in her voice rising as she gets further into Scar's motivations: "I had to be/ everything you/ couldn't be for/ my survival."
