Midnight Shine performs the 2000 Single of the year, "Bobcaygeon" by The Tragically Hip for our Junos 365 Sessions.

As part of our coverage of the 2019 Juno Awards, we're inviting some of today's hottest Canadian acts to cover a past winner in the single of the year category.

For its Junos 365 session, Midnight Shine picked the Tragically Hip's "Bobcaygeon," the winning single of the year at the 2000 Juno Awards.

"I felt like it was the right choice for us," says Midnight Shine's Adrian Sutherland, who founded the northern Ontario band in 2011. "Especially with all the work that Gord Downie did with Secret Path and raising awareness for First Nation issues in Canada."

Sutherland points out that "Bobcaygeon" is actually more complex than it sounds. "There's lots going on in there, so I had my work cut out for me when I started learning the song. Zach [Tomatuk] came up with the idea to put in a harmonica. It turned out really nice and made it something a little bit more unique to our band without getting too far away from the original song."

This Junos 365 session was Midnight Shine's first performance with the band's new drummer, Charnelle Menow, from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba.
