Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara fell victim to identity theft in 2011, and this fall, a new documentary will analyze how her personal files were used to catfish fans of the band.

Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, is set for release on Hulu on Oct. 18, and will dive into how the singer was hacked and used by a fraudster who impersonated her online.

"Interwoven with the investigation Tegan's team originally conducted in 2011, they uncover new victims and potential suspects and reveal sinister and unforeseen twists," states a synopsis of the film in Deadline. "Told through Tegan's own voice, the voices of deceived fans, a trove of visceral communications between fake Tegan and their victims and the visual history of the band's behind-the-scenes archive, this documentary feature is a thriller, a caper, a whodunnit and an intimate personal journey rolled into one. It cuts to the heart of love and betrayal, fame and fandom, desire and delusion in the 21st century."

Erin Lee Carr directed and produced the film, and her previous credits include At the Heart of Gold: Inside the U.S.A. Gymnastics Scandal and Britney vs Spears.

Tegan and Sara posted on Instagram about the documentary's release, with Tegan writing: "I have so much to say about the experience, the process, the film itself, but for now, just know that we decided to tell this story and make this film in hopes that we could stop Fake Tegan, give some peace to the victims, and hopefully warn people who might fall for this kind of thing in the future."

The documentary is not the musical siblings' first foray into TV and film: their memoir, High School, was made into a TV series for Amazon Freevee in 2022.
