B.C. teen brutally attacked by dogs

Vancouver police round up two pit bull dogs believed to have savagely attacked a teenage girl in Vancouver early Sunday

Authorities are confident they've tracked down two dogs that left a 14-year-old girl in hospital Sunday morning and a neighbourhood in fear.

The teen was savagely mauled as she walked home with a friend about 1:30 a.m. The dogs dragged her for 20 metres, clawing and biting her for five minutes.

A man and woman who heard the growls and screams by their house rushed outside and tried to help the young victim, beating back the dogs with an iron bar.

The girl remains in hospital with serious injuries to her face and arms, and may face years of reconstructive surgery.

"Veteran officers on the scene have never seen anything as horrible as this in their policing careers," Const. Sarah Bloor said in a statement.

The animals ran away, and many people in the neighbourhood were worried about their families' safety.

Late in the morning, Vancouver police said dogs with blood on their collars had been found and were taken to the local pound. Both are mastiff-pit bull terrier crosses. The owner had reported them missing.

Officials believe they've rounded up the right dogs, but DNA tests are being conducted to be certain. People in the area can rest easy again, said Const. Bloor. Everyone's thoughts are with the injured girl whose life will never be the same, she added.
