Two people have died on Edmonton streets in two crashes less than 12 hours apart.

A 71-year-old man crossing 66th Street was hit by a vehicle Wednesday night at 10:15 near 31st Avenue.

On Thursday, a 6-year-old girl and her great-grandmother, 66, were hit at 128th Street and 122nd Avenue around 8:20 a.m. while they were walking to St. Pius X School.

Both victims were taken to hospital where the woman died. The girl's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"No students or families witnessed the incident," said Edmonton Catholic Schools spokeswoman Lori Nagy.

"It happened so quickly and of course some students did run into the school and say that they needed an ambulance, but luckily no one witnessed the actual incident."

Police don't believe speed or alcohol were factors, but say the driver may have been blinded by the sun. There is no marked crosswalk in the area.

No charges have been laid so far in either incident.

The deaths are the second and third pedestrian fatalities of 2011 in Edmonton.
