Five people, ranging in age from 17 to 21, have been arrested in connection to a vicious assault on a Winnipeg teen in February.

Kawara Ojwato, 19, spent weeks in critical condition after being attacked outside an apartment block on Sara Street. He sustained serious injuries to the upper body and is still receiving medical care for his injuries, police said.

On Thursday, police announced the arrest of five males, all of whom have been charged with aggravated assault. One has also been charged with a variety of firearms-related offences.

Justice officials have also listed one of the suspects as a member of a known street gang operating in the West Broadway neighbourhood.

The five will appear in court at a future date, said police, adding that the suspects were not known to Ojwato.
