Green delivers 1,300-page report on legislative reforms

Details of a judge's review of the compensation given to Newfoundland and Labrador politicians will be made public later this week, Premier Danny Williams says.

Details of a judge's review of the compensation given to Newfoundland and Labrador politicians will be made public later this week, Premier Danny Williams says.

Derek Green, chief justice of the Newfoundland Supreme Court's trial division, turned over a 1,300-page report to Williams late Monday afternoon.

The report, which contains 80 recommendations, will be released Thursday.

Last June, Williams commissioned Green to write a report amid startling revelations from Auditor General John Noseworthy about how constituency allowances had been paid at the house of assembly.

Noseworthy found poor financial controls at the legislature, as well as excessive overpayments of constituency allowances. In reports that continued for months, Noseworthy identified five politicians from three parties who received about $1.6 million more than they were entitled to.

Williams said he asked Green to review the issue to ensure that mistakes revealed through the legislative spending scandal would not be repeated.

Williams will review Green's report with members of cabinet over the next few days.
