Convicted wife-beater William Imming has died in custody of natural causes.

A judge once described Imming as "reprehensible" for his attacks on women.

Imming was taken to hospital from his cell and declared dead just after midnight on Sunday.

He first made headlines in 1994 when he was found guilty of a brutal tire-iron attack on his ex-wife Heather that left her permanently disabled.

He was convicted in 1998 of beating and terrorizing his common-law wife Rachel Savage in her home for a week.

Imming was declared a dangerous offender in December 1999.
