Aysanabee covers 'The Weight' by The Band
To celebrate the 2024 The JUNO Awards , CBC Music recorded The Juno Sessions: a series where past and present Juno Award nominees and winners cover songs by musicians who have been inducted into the The Canadian Music Hall Of Fame. For the second instalment of The Juno Sessions, Oji-Cree singer-songwriter Aysanabee covered The Band's 1968 hit, “The Weight.” “It was great to be able to, as an Indigenous artist, cover another Indigenous artist, you know, Robbie Robertson,” Aysanabee told CBC Music. “I also have a little soft spot for classic rock too, because I grew up in these small northern towns where [that music] is always almost a bit nostalgic.” Aysanabee is up for three Junos this year, including songwriter of the year, alternative album of the year, and contemporary Indigenous artist of the year The Band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989. Although they never won any group Juno awards, songwriter and guitarist Robbie Roberston was nominated for eight and won five between 1989 and 1999.
