As It Happens: Friday Edition

Friday, May 29, 2015

Part One

FIFA elections
Despite this week's arrests of various FIFA officials, Sepp Blatter is re-elected as the president of soccer's governing body -- and our guest is among many not blowing a vuvuzela at the news.

Peter MacKay leaving politics
After nearly two decades, and some big cabinet posts, Justice Minister Peter Mackay announces he's leaving politics.

Robot butt
For Dr. Benjamin Lok, booty is truth, truth booty -- and for nervous doctors-in-training, Dr. Lok's virtual bum enables semi-realistic prostate exams with less discomfort.

Part Two

Manitoba care home death
Joe McLeod pushed a fellow Alzheimer's patient in a care home in 2011, killing him -- and tonight, Mr. McLeod's daughter reflects on the findings of the inquest.

Scripps Spelling Bee win
By spelling that word yesterday -- which means "the art of paper cutting" -- Vanya Shivashankar tied for the win at the Scripps Spelling Bee, six years after her sister's victory.

Part Three

Irish rifle
To Mark Sykes, it's anything but a museum piece. A rifle that's been on display in London's Imperial War Museum turns out to be the weapon used in multiple murders in Northern Ireland in 1992. And one of those killed was Mr. Sykes's brother-in-law.

No erasers
A British teacher explains why he believes mistakes are important -- and why it's time erasers were eliminated from classrooms.

Nazi beekeeper obit
Vladimir Katriuk spent decades of his life on a quiet farm in Quebec keeping bees. He also spent decades of his life fighting allegations that he was a Nazi war criminal. And now Vladimir Katriuk has died, aged 93. Orest Ruzik was Mr. Katriuk's lawyer.
