As It Happens

As It Happens: Friday Full Episode

Friday, June 22, 2018

Part One

Ambassador bridge
A Detroit billionaire pays for an ad saying his bridge between Canada and the U.S. should go ahead, and another cancelled. That ad has an intended audience of one: Donald Trump.

Newfoundland coat of arms
Newfoundland and Labrador's coat of arms is odd -- it has unicorns on it -- but our guest says it's also offensive -- and he's convinced the government to redesign it.

World Cup: Mexico
This week, Mexico scored a surprising win over Germany at the World Cup, and some say a video proves our guest's mother is responsible -- because it shows her blessing the Mexican players, on her TV.

Part Two

Drug relapse case
A Massachusetts woman argues it's cruel and unusual to punish an addict --- her client -- for violating her probation by using drugs.

Hot dog injury
A baseball mascot didn't even see our guest while he was firing hot dogs into the crowd with his hot dog cannon -- which is how he inadvertently hit her in the eye.

Part Three

Encore: 'The Optician of Lampedusa'
An encore presentation of our interview last year with BBC journalist Emma Jane Kirby, author of "The Optician of Lampedusa'. It is the true-life story of an Italian optician who, on October 3rd, 2013, rescued dozens of shipwrecked migrants off the coast of the tiny Italian island.
