As It Happens

As It Happens: The Friday Edition

Aug. 27, 2021

Part One

Afghanistan Pakistan border
As hope of evacuation by air runs out in Afghanistan, a reporter at the country's border with Pakistan says the number of people trying to make the crossing has quadrupled in recent days.

SCOTUS evictions
A U.S. Supreme Court decision ends a federal moratorium on evictions -- leaving millions of Americans, including our guest, wondering how long they have until they're out on the street.

Ryerson name change
Ryerson University has agreed to change its name following years of requests from Indigenous students, including our guest, to remove the institution's ties to an architect of the residential school system.

Part Two

Who is ISIS K
A group called ISIS-K claimed responsibility for yesterday's deadly bombings in Kabul -- and while the ISIS offshoot isn't familiar to most of us, our guest warned of an attack like this months ago.

Hummingbird study
Researchers discover that some adult female hummingbirds have a new strategy to avoid being chased and harassed -- they've adopted the bright feathers of their male counterparts.

Our technician is Reynold Gonsalves. The show director is John McGill.

The writers are Lisa Bryn-Rundle and Chris Howden. Austin Webb is our senior producer. And the Executive Producer of As It Happens is Robin Smythe.

We'd also like to thank some other people who helped us out this week:

Mary-Catherine McIntosh in Halifax
Andrea Bellemare, Jonathan Ore, Brandie Weikle, Eric Van and Luke Williams — all in Toronto
and Suzanne Dufresne in Winnipeg.

And finally, we must say so long and good luck to a fantastic long-time colleague.

For the past six years, the endlessly talented Jeanne Armstrong has been producing some of the best interviews you've heard on this program. Last night's Afghanistan interviews: all Jeanne. A 2015 interview about cyber-attacks perpetrated by squirrels, a 2018 interview about Donald Trump's steel tariffs, a 2017 interview with a Swedish porridge-making champion, and countless others: also all Jeanne.

She's the quintessential AIH producer, whose tenacity, journalistic instincts, and wicked sense of humour — as well as her tremendous empathy — helped us bring you the stories we want you to hear.

But good news for CBC listeners in Fredericton, New Brunswick: Jeanne Armstrong is your new morning show host. You're going to love her as much as we do. Have fun, Jeanne — we'll miss you terribly.

As It Happens will be back again on Monday. Good night, and good weekend.
