As It Happens: The Friday Edition
Part One
Downtown Eastside mail
An advocate for people living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside says Canada Post needs to hurry up and restore mail delivery to a stretch of the neighbourhood — and get over the stigma she thinks stopped it in the first place.
Umpire assaulted
The umpire of a 12-year-olds' softball game in Mississippi tells us about being punched in the face by an angry parent — and says she's not sure when she'll step onto a diamond again.
BC cougar dog
He looks like something the cat almost dragged out. But a dog named "Red" survived a cougar attack — thanks to the man who stepped in to defend his daughter's pet.
Part Two
Podcasts stealing material
When our guest heard about a podcast closely resembling one of his articles, he couldn't believe his ears — but then again, he's been the victim of what he calls a "shameless rip-off" before.
Hurricane rainfall study
The lead author of a study on the North Atlantic's record-breaking 2020 hurricane season says it's another reminder that climate change isn't just coming. It's here now.
Part Three
Encore: The Lost Words and The Lost Spells
To mark the return of Spring, we'll return to our conversations with author Robert Macfarlane about his enchanting books "The Lost Words" and "The Lost Spells." As he first told Carol in 2018, Macfarlane felt compelled to rescue nature-related words that had been dropped from the Oxford Junior Dictionary. And it turns out, that kind of reimagining was altogether in his nature, because his efforts — in that volume and its eventual successor — captured the imaginations of kids around the world.
