These skeletons scared the bejesus out of a snorkeler. They turned out to be fake.
After local police received a report of possible human remains at the bottom of the Colorado River, they sent down divers. What they found were two fake skeletons -- wearing sunglasses.
Lt. Curtis Bagby of the La Pas County Sheriff's Office in Parker, Arizona was in charge of the investigation.
"[The snorkeler] was a bit distraught," Lt. Bagby tells As It Happens co-host Carol Off. "He appeared to be legitimately concerned. He was worried about what we were going to find."
The report raised a few questions in the officer's mind.
"It is a river. It's a moving current, so if a person is deceased in the water, unfortunately, they float and they bloat," he says. "Nobody sinks."
And the snorkeler reported that the skeleton had nothing on it -- not even a scrap of clothing.
But "our job is to prove or disprove," Lt. Bagby says. "So I gave them a GoPro camera . . . the diver went down and a few minutes later he came up and he was laughing and that's not what I was expecting."
The skeletons were sitting in lounge chairs and wearing sunglasses. One had on a wig. The other had a sign that read "Bernie" -- which may be a reference to the 1989 movie "Weekend at Bernie's."
"They're just having a great time. Living the life," says Lt. Bagby.
Today, two men came forward to say they put the skeletons in the river. Lt. Bagby will not yet reveal their identity, but says they won't be charged.
"I don't want to steal their thunder," he says. "I feel that they put a lot of time and effort into this . . . They have a story to tell."
Stay tuned.
