Prologue

JD: Tonight:

CO: It took 47 years, one month, and 14 days for a single British soldier to be charged with murder for his role in the Bloody Sunday massacre in Northern Ireland. Our guest lost her brother that day in 1972 — and now she's lost hope for justice.

JD: Summa cum fraud-a. Dozens are charged in a bribery scam designed to get their kids into universities. Our guest says the real victims of that scam are underprivileged students who don't even apply.

CO: Leaping with the fishes. When our guest went to help her friend rescue some equipment from the big chunk of ice in Alaska, he wound up jumping from ice floe to ice floe to avoid jumping to a frigid conclusion.

JD: Gone, but not forgiven. A former priest who allegedly abused dozens of young boys is found dead one of the victims has mixed emotions about the apparent homicide.

CO: Special delivery. A Toronto woman sends a package containing thousands of dollars to save her nephew. But when she realizes she's been hoaxed, a heroic U.P.S. worker steps in to save the day.

JD: And Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Metal. Turns out for fans of that genre, they're the same thing because a new study suggests the punishing sound and explicit lyrics actually bring them joy.

JD: A former British soldier has been charged for his role in Bloody Sunday. The massacre took place in 1972, when British paratroopers opened fire on unarmed protesters in Londonderry — also known as Derry, Northern Island. Fourteen people were killed. Another 13 survived their injuries. The families of the dead have never stopped fighting for justice. Now, a man the police are only calling "Soldier F" has been charged with murdering two men, and trying to kill 4 others. Kate Nash's brother William was shot and killed by someone else. Her father was shot twice. We reached Ms. Nash in Londonderry.

CO: Kate, what does it mean for you that these charges have been laid against one soldier?

KATE NASH: Well, it's devastating. I'm very happy for the Wray family, of course, and the McKinney family, but I'm devastated. The fact that there was only one soldier prosecuted. They had 17 who had done various killings. And according to them, the evidence doesn't meet that test.

CO: And as you say, the official said that there was 18 others, in fact, 16 former British soldiers who had fired shots that day on Bloody Sunday. But the officials say there was insufficient evidence to provide a reasonable chance of conviction.

KN: Yes, that's right. We don't know why that happened. Bloody Sunday happened in front of the world press. I mean it's been a cover up for 47 years. And this is our first opportunity to be heard by the Public Prosecution Service here, which is an absolute disgrace when you cannot trust the authorities. There was so much interference from the British government within the last week. Theresa May, the prime minister, and Lord Saville, the judge who presided over the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, he actually came out and said the soldiers shouldn’t be prosecuted. He thought they had immunity. Yeah, unless they lied, which they did in that inquiry.

CO: Lord Saville was the man who did this report, he reinvestigated it, and his results came out in 2010. David Cameron, the prime minister at that time, said that the inquiry had left no doubt that soldiers had fired first. And the killings were both unjustified and unjustifiable. Did that leave you the impression that you were going to see charges laid against those who had opened fire, including those whoever had killed your own brother?

KN: No, no, I wasn't confident at that time because of the struggle we'd had over the years. Funny, I was confident this time. I felt sure there was going to be a lot more soldiers charged — just felt sure. And I can't tell you the devastation that we felt you know when they read out each sector of where the murders occurred. You know I just couldn't believe it. I suppose the struggle just goes on.

CO: This goes back, of course, to 1972, and Bloody Sunday. You were 23 years old. Your brother was 19. And what's the last thing you remember of him alive?

KN: My brother, the last thing I remember as him and I looking through the crack at a door. My brother had just brought home from England the girl he was going to marry. That was the last memory I have of him. You know we're looking through the crack of the door, and he's laughing, you know making a joke about something. So he was smiling you know and happy. And you know when he was going off to that march that day he was smiling and happy. I suppose not realising you know just the danger that any of those people were in.

CO: This was going to be a protest, and that was what his understanding what it was going to be.

KN: The civil rights movement had to come big by that stage in the north of Ireland. And this was a march against internment because they were arresting our people — innocent people — and they were throwing them in jail. And worse, they weren't going to trial. They were just thrown in jail. I mean that's not democratic. Of course, that's not democratic.

CO: How did you learn about the shooting that day?

KN: I was with a boyfriend at his house, and knock came at the door. And my boyfriend actually answered the door, and I seen you know my neighbour’s face. She was a good friend too. And I thought my mother had died. To be honest, looking at her, my mother was in hospital who'd had a heart attack a few days before, but was on the mend, you know? And when she said Willie has been shot dead, and your father has been wounded, but he's okay, my world just folded in on me to tell you the truth. I just thought it was a bad dream, and please wake up. I said I was being taken home and it was just a bad dream. I just couldn't believe it. And I didn't know I was going to cope with it?? Because at that time, my father and mother were in hospital. In fact, they didn't even get to see his funeral, you know? My mother didn't find out until the Wednesday — the day they were being buried. And they told her that she was sedated in hospital. And she just went silent till she get home, you know? And this is one memory always stands out for me. My mother put a foot over the door step, she started to scream Willie's name, you know? Willie, Willie, and that scream went on for a long time. That’s a vivid memory for me — so sad, so sad.

CO: And the Bloody Sunday report, they said that soldiers had lied to hide their actions. That the commanders had disobeyed orders and sent the troops into that area. That soldiers had opened fire knowing their targets posed no threat. And the report said that other soldiers had fired without being sure. There are those who are saying today that it's possible that some of the other soldiers could face charges of perjury. Is that something that what you would like to see happen? Is that something that you anticipate?

KN: Of course. You know there's no guarantees in justice here. They don't deliver justice. They try and avoid this. I would be very surprised. It could take them years. That's the way they go. The British government, they're waiting for us all to die or soldiers, whatever. Because they don't want it known what they done on Bloody Sunday.

CO: Over all of these years, you and others have been trying to get some justice — even recognition before justice. And you've done this in the name of your brother Willie. What he wants you to continue even now?

KN: Oh yes, he would surely. He would surely. Well, he would have never laid down to a bully. So yes, I think he would most definitely.

CO: Is there anything that could help you move on, Kate?

KN: To help me move on really, I would need to see justice. I mean it hasn't happened this time. But you know what? We will keep fighting for justice.

JD: Kate Nash's brother William was shot and killed in the Bloody Sunday massacre in 1972. We reached Ms. Nash in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. After those shootings in 1972, Londonderry's former Catholic Bishop Edward Daly was waving a bloodied handkerchief over one of the victims. Then, the BBC asked him what had happened?

EDWARD DALY: They just came in firing. There was no provocation whatsoever.

REPORTER: Firing what? Rubber bullets?

ED: No, this was lead bullets they fired. They seemed to fire in all directions. There were some rubber bullets too. They didn't even seem to fire gas. It was just completely outrageous, disgraceful. They call themselves an army. It's utterly disgraceful, I think.

REPORTERR: Are you quite sure that there nothing was fired at them?

ED: There was nothing fired at them. I'm absolutely certain of that. I can speak of this without any difficulty whatsoever because I was there. I was just standing at the flats when they started first of all, and there was nothing fired at them. Positively nothing fired at them whatsoever. There weren't even stones fired. The people ran in all directions, and they opened fire. Most people had their backs to them and they opened fire at the time.

REPORTER: A short while ago, we filmed you leading the way with a white handkerchief.

ED: Yes.

REPORTER: Carrying a boy who was dead or dying. Now how was he shot?

ED: That little boy was shot when he was running away. He was just a little bit behind me when he fell. I heard the shot, I looked around, I saw him dying.

REPORTER: You saw him?

ED: Yes. And he was shot…

REPORTER: He was a young man, was he?

ED: He was a young boy — I would say about 15.

JD: From January 1972, that was Edward Daly, the former Catholic Bishop of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, speaking to the BBC following the Bloody Sunday massacre.

Ice floe rescue

Guest: Phillip Rode

JD: When the going gets tough, the people living in Nome, Alaska — the good people living in Nome, Alaska — tend to stick together. Living 800 kilometres northweast of Anchorage, they kinda have to. And so on Sunday, when one of Phillip Rode's friends needed a hand retrieving diving equipment from an ice floe that had broken free from the shoreline, he jumped at the chance to help. Little did he know he'd keep jumping, from one chunk of ice to another, in an attempt to keep from floating away on the Bering Sea, or ending up at the bottom of it. We reached Phillip Rode in Nome.

CO: Philip, at what point did you realize that you were in trouble??

PHILIP RODE: I began to realize we were in trouble when the pieces of ice underneath us were starting to fragment into smaller pieces.

CO: Yikes! And you were still in the middle of trying to get this equipment — this diving equipment of your friends — off the ice floe, right?

PR: Correct.

CO: Did you think maybe we should abandon this, and just head for shore?

PR: Well, about the third trip, we realized that what happened was my friend and I were walking back, and it was really, really far like from when we first started. And so I got about halfway, and I was carrying a generator, and I said you know what? That's too far for two people to walk. So I set the generator down, and I turned around and went back. So that by the time the other guy got back to the boat, he could come back for the next load, and I'd be back with another one. And when I got out there, I could hear the guys start yelling. And when I got there, that piece of ice that had the equipment on it had already fragmented into three pieces, and I was like oh. So then I started to traverse across the ice field. But by then, we had a little over a mile between myself and the boat because of the way the ice was moving.

CO: And did you say maybe I should stay with the boat? Or did you continue to try and get the equipment?

PR: I was continuing to try to get the equipment. We had our livelihood out there, and you know we're trying to save as much of it as possible, so that we could continue to work.

CO: Now at what point did it become really, really dicey, when you were trying to find some place I guess just to hang on?

PR: We didn't realize we were in open water until the winds and the current were rocking the pieces of ice and breaking them up. And then we're like oh! But by then, we were out in the sea. And another ice field had come in and flanked us from behind. So by then, we were trapped in the middle of it, drifting out to sea.

CO: Yikes! And so basically you were there trying to go from jump from chunks of ice to chunks of ice as they broke up, is that right?

PR: Yes, I was jumping for close to a mile-and-a-half from a piece of ice to piece of ice. Because of all the weight of the snow, we had so much snow that the ice was only out of the water about four inches. And then that that two feet or three feet of snow on the top was getting to be like a slushy material, really slushy. So it was heavy hiking.

CO: You didn't know at that point that anyone had seen you or known that you were drifting, right?

PR: Nope, had no idea until we got back. What kind of peril we were in really until we were in the chopper. Because I was out there coming across the ice, and then all of a sudden a helicopter was flying over. I thought they were just checking this out. And then they left for a little bit. And then apparently they were waiting for me to get back, and the other guy had just found a piece of ice big enough for them to set their small helicopter on to pick us up off of.

CO: Before you had that rescue, what were you wearing in the way of gear? What did you have with you to keep it to keep dry?

PR: Just my car hearts and my musk boots, and just regular warm gear. I wasn't really dressed to go in any water.

CO: It wasn't just that the ice was breaking up into smaller pieces, but that you were drifting out into open water. That was the other thing, right?

PR: Yeah, they said that the fire department was watching from the shore. And they lost us out of sight in their binoculars, which had a three mile range, so they knew we're at least three miles off key.

CO: How close did you come in to not surviving this?

PR: One long jump. I got on one piece of ice right towards the very end. The pieces of ice began separating, and I'd already thrown one piece of equipment onto a piece of ice that I drifted away from. So that was a loss. And I started looking around, and realized that all the pieces were drifting apart. And I was like either now or never, so I took that the DeWalt bag, threw it onto the other chunck, and then long jumped it. It was about you know a good three-foot jump, and it is hard because you're in slush, and the edges of the ice you're unsure of because you don't know if they want to break underneath you or not.

CO: What about your gear, the stuff for your livelihood?

PR: It's lost. Somewhere out there in the Bering Sea is a Zodiac full of tools and gear.

CO: But it could have been you've in the Bering Sea.

PR: Yeah, the gear's replaceable; we're not. So we were very fortunate to get out of that situation alive.

CO: Now just in case anyone thinks that you are being reckless here, people say they have not seen the ice like this in March before around Nome. How unusual was it?

PR: I've been working offshore on the ice for eight years now, and we've never seen the ice go out before the first part of May. And this is record-breaking because they're usually really solid ice here, and it usually freezes you know a long ways. This year, for whatever reason, our ice has just been getting smaller every year. This year was just horrible though.

CO: That's going to affect other things, right? Like the hunting season.

PR: Yeah, all of western Alaska is impacted. All the local Inuit communities, which rely on their spring hunts for their subsistence food and survival, all of less than Alaska communities are impacted by this. It's kind of a big deal.

CO: Well, Philip, I'm glad that you're okay, and you and your mates are safe as well. And wow! What an experience.

PR: Yeah, didn’t really realize what we were into until we had to be rescued. But we have a tight-knit mining and fishing community here, and people help each other out. you know we all work together up there. That's what Alaskans do.

CO: I'm glad they were there for you. Philip, thank you.

PR: Yes, thank you.

Death metal study

Guest: Bill Thompson

JD: Just in case you're dozing off over the potatoes, or on your commute home here's a little death metal.

[Music: Death metal]

JD: I think that would work nicely as a theme for our midnight edition. Now in case you didn't catch the lyrics, good — because you probably wouldn't like them, and you may be deeply concerned about the people who do. But according to research, you don't need to be. A new psychology study has found that frequently listening to death metal does not desensitize fans to violence. In fact, it can inspire a surprising emotion in them. That being joy. Professor Bill Thompson is the director of the Music, Sound, and Performance Lab at Macquarie University, and one of the leaders of the study. We reached Professor Thompson in Sydney, Australia.

CO: Professor Thompson, it's probably quite obvious, but what is it about death metal that makes people think it makes fans of the music more violent?

BILL THOMPSON: Well, death metal is all about death, and it is often about violence. Most of the songs have depictions of violence in the lyrics, and some of them are really edgy. Some of them depict rape, murder. It's most often a male perpetrator against a female victim. So it's not surprising that people worry about music such as death metal, and the music itself is quite aggressive.

CO: But people have taken it further, and believe that it is actually a motivator, or it spurs some on to do violence like the Columbine school shooters were said to be metal fans. So there is a correlation in the minds of the public, is there not?

BT: Yeah, I think so. And, of course, these distinctions between death metal and thrash metal and black metal all become blurred, and so often one genre gets blamed. But I think it's understandable particularly from an outsider's perspective that people might worry and might wonder whether people who maybe already have issues with anger and violent tendencies are further encouraged by that kind of music. So they may not think that the music is actually gonna cause violence, but they might feel that it kind of enables it and doesn't discourage it, certainly.

CO: And that's what you set out to test, right?

BT: Well yes, we were kind of interested in the idea of desensitization. So the idea that it's a little hard to show that music actually causes violence — like literal violence. But what's a little bit more straightforward is to show that it might cause some desensitization to violence in the real world, so that people are a bit immune to it or don't care as much about it, or are less empathetic. So that was the purpose of our study to look at this notion of desensitization.

CO: And who did you use in your experiment?

BT: So we tested people who were actually longstanding fans of death metal music, and then also compare it with non-fans of violent music. And a lot of past research has actually looked at the effects of listening to extreme metal on non-fans, which is a little funny because non-fans don't like it. And so it's not surprising that they actually do feel quite annoyed and often actually a little bit angry after listening to that music. But it's hard to know whether that generalizes to actual fans.

CO: Okay, and at the danger of making our listeners angry, we've already played them a bit of Cannibal Corpse, and we're going to play just a bit of a cut called Eaten by a band called Blood Bath. So just to tell people to hold on here, buckle up, and here it is.

CO: Charming. And you wanted to compare that, and you also used in your study another song, quite different by contrast called Happy by Pharrell. So here is happy.

CO: Ok, I don't know which is more annoying, but anyway those are your two cuts. And so how did you test people who volunteered with those music?

BT: Well, there's two parts to the study really. I'm feeling a little bit like being eaten. I don't know about you, but after hearing that music. But that aside, one thing was the binocular rivalry paradigm. Binocular rivalry involves presenting one image to one eye, and a different image simultaneously to the other eye. And one of the images as violent and the other is nonviolent. And it turns out that the brain can't process easily two simultaneous images. Measuring the duration with which you see each of the two images can tell you about unconscious processing. And what you see normally is that there is a negativity bias or violent imagery. Most people will see that violent image for longer than the neutral image. The brain will dwell on it, presumably because it's a threat, and some sort of biological response to threatening stimuli. And so we reasoned that if the fans were desensitized to violence then they wouldn't show this negativity bias. But they did show this negativity bias, and it was equivalent to the negativity bias shown for non-fans. So that first stage shows that there really isn't any long standing desensitization to violence outside of the music. Of course, they’re, in a sense, desensitized to the violence in the music because they love it. But they're not desensitized to violent imagery, and presumably not in a general sense.

CO: I suppose it's still going to be difficult to convince others in the society that lyrics about decapitation and cannibalism will not desensitize people?

BT: It is hard, and it's still a puzzle for me that people kind of let that slide. But it doesn't seem to have any negative effects. These fans, they don't hear it as violent. They hear it as empowering, as joyful, as energetic, as transcendent. So they get all of these very positive emotional responses from this music.

CO: Well, interesting research. I'm not sure you'll convince me that this is the case, but it's interesting to hear from you, Professor Thompson. Thank you.

Part two: College admission scam, grandparent scam UPS

College admission scam

Guest: Asha Rangappa

JD: They've been charged with spending millions in bribes to get their kids into elite schools. Now, those parents have been exposed — and their case has exposed the so-called "side-door" of college admissions. As you've probably heard, dozens of people — amoung them high-profile actors and CEOs — have been indicted in what may be one of the largest college admissions cheating scams in U.S. history. And now, there's the worry about what this will mean for the schools, and those who apply to them. Asha Rangappa is a former admissions dean at Yale Law School. She wrote an op-ed for CNN about who she thinks are the victims of this scandal. We reached Ms. Rangappa in Quechee, Vermont.

CO: Asha, we're getting new details about this college and university scam every day that includes our country as well. I mean it's difficult to isolate ones that are the most outrageous. But did you have any idea that such a broad and wide scam was going on?

ASHA RANGAPPA: I have to say that this extreme of inequity and you know this kind of behaviour like outright bribes and people literally selling seats did shock me. But I have to say in my twelve years as the dean of admissions at Yale Law School, there was a lot of legal behaviour that I saw that worried me. And that clearly was allowing wealthier and privileged students to tilt the balance in their favour.

CO: Like what?

AR: Well, you know I learned when I became the dean of admissions that there were consulting services out there that would charge two, five, 10, 20, thousand dollars for assistance on preparing applications. You know I didn't even know that these services existed. And when I saw them, I said how do I know when I'm reading an application if somebody has used one of these things?

CO: But I mean those kinds of companies or those services are out there. They exist in I guess a legal sphere. But at what point did it sort of seem to cross over into fraud and scam artistry?

AR: You know I can't get into the mind of people who will go from you know paying for help, to crossing the line to literally pay for a seat. But I mean I am guessing that it's not hard once you start going down that path. I mean let's remember that the person who is in the centre of this scheme was actually selling these kinds of consulting services. And it was through the course of these consulting services that he would kind of test the waters and say hey, would you be interested in this side door option?

CO: And this the person you're mentioning is William Singer, who has now pleaded guilty in federal court to this, and he’s cooperating with prosecutors, which has allowed them to charge 50 people so far. They’re anticipating other charges. Most of those charged are parents, who have spent up to about 25 million dollars in total to get their kids into these schools. Was it necessary? Do you think that there was any chance those kids could have gotten just on their own?

AR: I mean I have no idea because you know in many instances these students had test scores that were doctored. I am assuming that the parents didn't think so highly of their natural abilities, otherwise they would have you know let them take their shot, and maybe like offered to make a donation to the school, which is like another kind of problematic and legal sort of behaviour. But at least it's happening above ground I suppose. I think the other issue that this highlights is the issue of athletic recruitment. I mean what's happening here is that you know in many of these schools, the athletic departments literally had a certain number of seats that were set aside, and effectively were allowed to bypass the regular admissions process. So Mr. Singer would effectively say I have someone on the inside in these athletic departments. Make up a profile of your kid as an athlete. And what we'll do is we'll have this person on the inside will basically give one of these athletic slots to your child.

CO: Perhaps one the most egregious examples of that is one of the allegations that a senior executive at a global private equity firm arranged to have his son, or allegedly had his son slated as a kicker for a football team even though his high school didn't even have a football team. And they offered to put the picture of his child onto a photo of another football player in order to get him in. I mean if these allegations are proven true, they went to great lengths, didn't they?

AR: Yes. I mean this is outright fraud. I don't know how to put it. And I think you know really the question now is what happens to these children?

CO: What you've written about though is really important, which is that it’s one thing about the kids who got in. It's about the kids who didn't get in. What worries you about what the colleges and what the good the general public lost in the way of these talented people?

AR: Yeah, well I think there's actually two different categories there. So the students that applied in the same year as these students. And they weren't given a fair shake. You know what I wrote about is actually an even farther removed category that I think are also victims of this. And these are students you know maybe thinking about college. And for wealthy or privileged students, applying to Ivy League schools or elite schools is sort of expected of them. You know I know from experience that if you go to some random public school and you don't know anybody who goes to these schools or don't have this kind of network, you're not getting that message. And at this point, all you're seeing now is are these kinds of things on TV, and the message that if you're not well connected and you don't have money, you have no chance. And so I worry about the people who are not even going to put their hats in the ring. And when I was the admissions dean at Yale Law School, I really wanted a diverse applicant pool — whether it was socioeconomic or geographic — because you know I was looking for the best students to come in and be a part of the community. And so when those students opt out, it's not only bad for them because they may have gotten in, but it's bad for the institutions because they lose out on the benefit of their perspective.

NB nurse attack

JD: New laws are coming to protect workers from violence on the job. For the New Brunswick Nurses Union, they can't come soon enough. The laws will require employers conduct risk assessments for violence. They take effect on April 1st. But a recent study showed 63 per cent of nurses in New Brunswick have faced violence. Union representatives say overcrowding and understaffing can ramp up frustrations — and outbursts. The stats came into shocking focus on Monday when a Moncton nurse was attacked on the job. Her mother, Norma Melanson, spoke to CBC News about the incident. And a warning to listeners, the details are disturbing.

NORMA MELANSON: A visitor who she never saw in her life walked in her office. He closed the door, and said I give you three seconds to transfer my wife in another room. But it was a medical order that the wife had to be closer to the desk for close observations. So she didn't have time to respond that he pulled her up by the hair, and remove two handfuls of hair from her head. Then he knocked her on the wall, and then punched her in the face — two black eyes she has, and a very big lump on one of the eyes. That's what she tells me because she doesn't want me to go see her because she says it's too traumatic for me for now. And then what he did he struck her in the ribs, and then floored her. And she was crying for help because there was no panic button in her office, nor any alarm or a bell to ring. So whoever heard anyways they called the code — the white code — which is for aggressively at the hospital. But she said that that day it took eleven minutes. So when he was… I shouldn't say finishing the job… when he floored her, and was trying to choke her. She said well, I can't say good bye. But I'm going to die. This is how she felt. And then like she was in all various states, like she is so upset, she's having a lot of flashbacks and nightmares that he's killing her. Like that's how she feels. She calls here maybe four times a day when it's possible for her. And she says just don't worry. But I know she's on the phone and she's crying and so am I also because it's hard. It's not easy.

JD: That was Norma Melanson, the mother of a nurse who was attacked at work this week. The nurse was treated for a broken nose and a brain contusion. A 69-year-old man from Acadieville, New Brunswick was arrested. He'll appear in court in June.

Grandparents scam UPS

Guest: Donna Scott

JD: Maybe you've heard of the so-called "Grandparent Scam": a call comes into the victim, from someone pretending to be a relative in distress. They're in trouble, and they need money — lots of it — right away. Last month, that harrowing scam prompted a woman to stuff thousands of dollars into a manila envelope — she thought was going to help her nephew. She took it to a UPS office in Toronto's East End. Donna Scott is a UPS employee who helped send that woman's package — and also helped get the package back to her in the nick of time. We reached Donna Scott in Toronto.

CO: Donna, I know you're at work right now, where you get dozens of packages every day. This one we're going to talk about was a bit different. What was it about the woman when she came in with this urgent package? What do you remember about her?

DONNA SCOTT: Well, I remember her. She came in and she seemed a little frantic, but that's not out of the norm you know this time of year people shipping things. She wanted you know to have her package sent to Montreal as quickly as possible.

CO: And did she tell you what was in the package?

DS: She did not. No, she didn't. If it’s going somewhere in Canada, she doesn't need to say really what's in there. It was wrapped in a magazine, and then we put it into an envelope. So she wanted it there as quickly as possible. I offered to her that we could get there to Montreal for 9:00 a.m. It was a little extra money. She said yes, absolutely. So we proceeded with the package. She left. There was nothing out of the normal at that time.

CO: When did you hear back from her?

DS: It was the next day, around 11:30 in the morning, she called, I answered the phone. She said she needed to stop the package. And you know I looked at the clock. It was after 11:30, and I remember it was a 9 a.m. delivery, so thinking right away that the package had already arrived.

CO: And is that what you said to her?

DS: I said to her the package probably arrived already. But let me check. I checked, and sure enough, it had not. So I thought well, that's good. But I said it’s probably a snowstorm the day before. So it's more than likely it's been delayed. She did tell me that the package was fraud.

CO: Waoh! What did she tell you?

DS: That she said I need to have the package stopped because it’s fraud. I didn't ask her any other questions. I knew exactly what had happened.

CO: What do you mean you knew exactly what…

DS: I knew that it was fraud. Because about a year-and-a-half earlier, I had a similar incident where a package where somebody had sent somebody money, and that it was a fraud case.

CO: Uh huh. So what did you learn about this package?

DS: I didn't know until the reporter from the Toronto Star had come in, and had said exactly the extent of what had happened.

CO: But you're part of it. And as the Toronto Star points out, all kinds of people got involved with trying to help this woman they're calling Elaine to stop this money from going to this scam artist that she got caught up with. But what did you have to do in order to stop that package?

DS: So immediately, I told the customer that you know I'll call UPS, let me see what I could do. Called UPS, told them exactly the situation that this package was fraud. It looks like it still hasn't been delivered to the cause to the receiver yet. She said ok, let me see what I can do. I'll call you back. She called me back saying ok, we've flagged the package to stop being shipped and to return it.

CO: Was she fairly relieved to hear that?

DS: Yes. I mean I called the customer, UPS was really good because they were able to contact Montreal, and said ok, flag this, and stop it.

CO: Did she tell you how much money was inside that package?

DS: Yeah, I did not really know until the Toronto Star informed me exactly how much was in there.

CO: Twelve thousand five hundred dollars.

DS: Yeah, that they just blew me right away. I couldn't believe it.

CO: Now people know where packages are going with UPS and other couriers because you can track it, right? You can watch and see its movements, and know if it gets to its destination. But there was somebody else tracking this package as well. What do you know about that?

DS: Well, when you shipped package from us, they get notifications you know that's gone there, it's been returned. It’s just something that we do as a service here if you come into the store here. So I said to the customer when she was here I said well, how about I also send it to your receiver? She said oh, yeah, yeah, do that — because he's really waiting for this this package. I’m like okay. So he also got notification that this package was stopped, and that it was being returned back to the person — the customer. So from what I was told that this person called her on her cell phone, somehow managed to get her cell phone number. We don't put that information on the shipping packages at all. So somehow, this person got her cellphone number, called her, and said that they were from UPS, and that the package wasn't allowed to be returned to her.

CO: Oooooo!

DS: Yeah. But at this time already, she knew. She thought why is UPS calling me? She called us, and no, you know we don't give those cell phone numbers on the package anywhere.

CO: What do you know about what happened? How this woman was scammed?

DS: They said it was a nephew that was calling, and that he was I think either needed some legal financial aid. And that money had to be sent right away to his lawyer — it can only be cash. Don't tell the shipping people that it's cash because you're not allowed to send cash through ups curriers.

CO: So somebody called her, and somehow convinced her it was her nephew calling?

DS: That's right.

CO: And then the nephew, as I understand from the Toronto Star this fake nephew passed it on to a lawyer, who said look, I’m going try and get your nephew off, but you got to send some money right away because otherwise he's going to have a DUI charge.

DS: Yes.

CO: And so she, of course, wanted to help him. So she went to the bank, and had to even take it out on her credit card to get all the money to pay.

DS: Yeah, yeah.

CO: And it seems that if you hadn't helped her, I mean the police can't really do much. And that money was gone. And the banks, they had questions, but this fake lawyer had actually counselled her just well they ask you my questions about why you’re taking this cash, say it’s for renovations. So the whole thing, these very brazen scam artists. They had it down pat, didn't they?

DS: Yeah. And you know they fall in vulnerable people. And when it's family, you know it's family. You do what you can for them.

CO: Have you seen Elaine? Have you seen her since?

DS: She did come into the store. You know she bought a gift for Sarah and I just thank us. And you know she was upset, and felt really you know bad. And I just reassured her that you know it was a good thing that you know it worked out well.

CO: What advice would you give to people when they get calls like this.

DS You know, it's funny because I have a 19-year-old son, and I told him the story that weekend. And I said you know we need a plan. We need a plan, where you know you have code words, or we have something that this doesn't happen. Maybe you need to create that with your family.

CO: That's interesting. It's come to that — that you actually have to have ways of identifying people, so you don't get stung by this.

CO: Well Donna, I'm glad you were there. And I'm glad you took that matter in hand, and got that money back for Elaine. And I appreciate that.

DS: I'm glad she came into the store because if you don't come into the store, sometimes you don’t have that contact to help either, so.

CO: I think you also cared.

DS: Yeah,

CO: So that was the other part of it. Thank you.

Antonio Alberta

JD: High of 3 degrees tomorrow in Antonio, Alberta, with winds from the northwest. The town has a 10 percent chance of precipitation, and a zero percent chance of existence. On Weather Network maps, the community of Antonio appears to be about an hour's drive east from Lethbridge. Except, if you make that drive, you'll find that the community of Antonio doesn't appear at all. So what gives? People in southern Alberta have been asking for a while. And after a storm of controversy — which is to say, a handful of tweets and one note to the Lethbridge Herald newspaper — the network is finally addressing that place with no address. Jim Saini — the director of Geographical Information Systems for The Weather Network — says, quote, "Our location data come from one of our data suppliers — they have over 250 thousand named locations in Canada." Unquote. He also points out that both Wikipedia and Google Maps feature Antonio on the Crowsnest Highway, midway between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. And a Lethbridge Herald reader says there once was a there there. William B. Turnbull wrote to say, quote, "This place was originally a railway siding halfway between the villages of Grassy Lake and Purple Springs...In about 1912, a one-room school was built there...where the local children including my mother and her other siblings attended." Unquote. Interesting. But that school closed in 1927. And Mr. Saini admits that using Antonio as a reference point is pointless. The Weather Network says they'll replace it. That's best. Because yes, Antonio was once a place — but now, really, that's neither here nor there.

Part three: Former priest killed, endangered animals dog

FOA: Lac-Megantic Netflix

JD: The next time they turn on the Netflix movie "Bird Box", should they turn that on, the residents of Lac-Megantic won't have to relive the disaster that killed 47 people in their town. Today, Netflix said it will remove the rail disaster footage from the film. The new version will be released in two weeks. Back in January, Carol spoke with Marie-Claude Arguin, the deputy city manager of Lac-Megantic, about how the town was reacting to the footage. Here is part of that conversation.

SOUNDCLIP

MARIE-CLAUDE ARGUIN: Well I'm going to say that those who are affected, those who've been working so hard and are still working so hard five years after to forget and then to move on with their life. It's one thing that we're seeing you know when you when you sit down, and you know you look back at it, and you're like oh my god, like they're actually using those images for commercial use. Let's just put it this way. But I have to say that the first reaction is not about the fact that it lacks respect. What we're thinking first is that it immediately brings you back to that night that you're trying to forget. So the first thing is like why am I seeing this again? Like the progress that one may have done over the past five – five-and-a-half years and on their own road to recovery at their own pace could potentially bring them back to square one very quickly.

CO: The companies are saying that they regret that they didn't realize it. But the company that sold the images, when they sell these stock pictures, they know, or they were they should know where the images come from. So what do you make of a company that's making money selling a disaster, a tragedy, in your town?

MCA: Well, I guess all I can say is like clearly. Again, I'm not going to judge them, but clearly they haven't lived what people that truly lived those images, as opposed to just watched them. So they can't understand. And I'm hoping by the message that we're sending now… because quite ironically, the past few days, a lot of media is I'm actually… like point in case. Like I'm talking to you about this now. We have other interviews. So these past few days, at the same time that we're talking about that we shouldn't see those images again, well by talking about it, they're all over the news over again, right?

JD: That was Lac-Megantic deputy city manager Marie-Claude Arguin speaking with Carol in January. Today, Netflix said it will remove the Lac-Megantic footage from Bird Box.

Former priest killed

Guest: Rich Fitter

JD: Last weekend, police in Henderson, Nevada found a 70-year-old man dead in his home. John Capparelli had a gunshot wound to his throat. Investigators are treating the death as a homicide — and they're looking for leads. One of them may be the man's past. John Capparelli was a Catholic Priest who had been accused dozens of times of sexual abuse, from the time before he was removed as a priest in New Jersey. Just last month, his name was on a list released by the Catholic Church in that state — a list of clergy the church determined had been credibly accused of sexual abuse. Rich Fitter says he was sexually assaulted when he was in the wrestling club Mr. Capparelli ran for young boys. We reached Rich Fitter in Sparta, New Jersey.

CO: Rich, how did you come to hear about John Capparelli’s death?

RICH FITTER: I had a fellow survivor reached out to me. A Las Vegas reporter had reached out to his family, and let us know. And he reached out to me, and asked if I had heard. And at the same time, I received a Facebook message from the same reporter in Las Vegas.

CO: Police are now calling his death a homicide. What went through your mind when you learned that?

RF: Karma. He has 40 years of being a serial predator. He is a sociopath. He was involved in a number of illicit businesses and has kind of a shady past. In addition to 40 years of abusing young men.

CO: Can I just go back to what do you mean by karma?

RF: I would say that he had a very violent life. He hurt a lot of people, and he died a very violent death. I would have to say that it's kind of cosmic justice. I don't condone what happened to him, but I do feel that there's a certain symmetry to it.

CO: John Capparelli was a Catholic priest from 1980 to 1992. And he left to church after a couple of dozen men accused him of sexual misconduct. He still went on to become a teacher in the public school system. When did you encounter him?

RF: I first encountered him in 1982. We had a friendship from 1982 until 1983.

CO: But you knew him through a wrestling club, is that right?

RF: Yeah, he ran the CYL, which is kind of like a youth program in our town at the Catholic Church. I would go up there with my friends. I'm not Catholic; I'm Presbyterian. But all were welcome. So I would go there to play basketball or volleyball or softball with my friends. And he took an interest in me for this wrestling program that he had organized. And really, it was nothing more than his way of grooming people.

CO: The Star Ledger newspaper in New Jersey was the paper that told the story, and reported on these past allegations. And that was in 2011. And that's… you mentioned that he was defrocked in 2013. His career came to an end when it was exposed. Do you think that he ever would have been revealed if it hadn't been for that investigation by reporters?

RF: No, I give a lot of credit to the Star Ledger, and I give a lot of credit to the first survivor that came forward in that because without that, I would not have come forward. Because I thought that when I came forward in 92, I thought that he was no longer a threat to anyone. That's all I asked for the Catholic Church. I didn't ask for a settlement. I didn't ask for them to pay for any therapy. I didn't ask for anything other than he not be allowed near kids. And they lied to me. They told me that he was defrocked back then. And they told me that he was no longer a danger to kids. And that was Bishop McCarrick, Theodore McCarrick, was the person that was running the Newark archdiocese at that time. And McCarrick became the cardinal, and was just removed last year because of allegations of his own sexual misconduct.

CO: It was only this year that the Catholic dioceses of New Jersey released a list of people they said had been credibly accused of child abuse — 1888 members of their clergy on that list. And John Capparelli was among them. And that finally came out just now, just last month. when you saw that, what did that mean for you?

RF: A certain amount of validation. Capparelli has never been held accountable for anything — anything that he has ever done. He has always somehow been able to skirt responsibility for any actions in his life. So I think for me to see his name featured prominently as credibly accused by the Church — the Church admitting that there was evidence — that was a little bit of vindication for all of us survivors that had to hear him deny his responsibility.

CO: And now he's been killed. He's been he's been murdered, and there's this investigation. You mentioned karma at the beginning. I just wonder though if do you wish that he could face justice? That this could actually become a criminal case, and not in this way? Does some part of you wish that that could have happened?

RF: Yeah, absolutely. I've never gotten an apology from him, and I have never got an admission that he knew what he was doing was wrong from him, and I never will. So in that sense, I’d always wish that at some point I would have that. But by the same token, the way things happen he will never be able to hurt anyone ever again. And the world is a safer place without John Capparelli in it.

CO: Rich, it’s a very disturbing story. And I appreciate you being so honest with us. Thank you.

Bacteria birthday cakes

JD: Maybe you were lucky enough to see the video this week: U.S. Republican Senator Mitt Romney, and former presidential candidate, celebrating his 72nd birthday.

MITT ROMNEY: Oh my goodness, what I've always wanted. Look at that. Holy cow!

JD: Now this is the part we know where the person celebrating a birthday blows out the candles, all at once. And yet, the senator stalled, marvelling at the cake made entirely of Twinkies. And then slowly, oddly, one by one, he plucked each candle from the cake and blew it out individually — at a safe distance from the Twinkie-cake itself. He's been widely mocked for this alien-seeming behaviour. But perhaps, friends, the joke is on us. Paul Dawson, a professor of Food Science at Clemson University in South Carolina, has studied the potential risks of less careful candle-blowing.

SOUNDCLIP

PAUL DAWSON: Well, it looks kind of strange because that's not normally how we blow out birthday candles. But maybe he read our study or read a book we just wrote where we studied how much bacteria, or the amount of bacteria it's transferred to the top of the cake when you blow birthday candles out.

DAVID GRAY: All right, how did you study this?

PD: So instead of doing a whole cake, we just took the layer of icing and put that on top of a sterile foil surface, and stuck candles through there into Styrofoam, lit those candles, and had people either blow them out and then take the candles out and recover the bacteria, or not blow them out. And then, again, we compared the number of bacteria and the ones that had been blown, versus the ones had not been blown. And found about, on average, 3,000 more bacteria on the ones that had been blown than ones that hadn't been blown. As you might expect, some people are sloppy or blowers, if you will, than others. And on one cake, we found 37,000 bacteria, versus almost none one the one that hadn't been blown. And you could think of the scenarios where maybe young children, very young children, or very old people have less control of their saliva, if you will. So there would be more spray, if you will. Most of that's probably a yuck factor. On the other hand, that's how certainly in the winter, this time year, we’re warned about covering her mouth when we sneeze or cough, and that's how those type of colds and common flu are transferred. So now I guess you could think of it if you're getting ready to down eat your dinner, do you want some by leaning over six inches from your suit and blowing as hard as they can on your food? Maybe some people do, maybe some people don't. But that's really what's happening.

DG: Should we all start picking up the candles, and blowing them out like Senator Mitt Romney?

PD: I would say no. But, again, maybe Mitt had a cold. I don't know maybe he was considerate of people who were going to eat the Twinkies. And maybe somebody in the room didn't want him blowing on their Twinkie before they ate it.

JD: So many questions. That was food science professor Paul Dawson from Clemson University in South Carolina, speaking to David Gray, host of "The Calgary Eyeopener" this morning about the bacteria that may be lurking on birthday cake after we have blown all over it — this in the wake of Mitt Romney showing us how it's done.

Endangered animals dog

Guest: Karen Dematteo

JD: Dogs like to smell stuff — the grosser, the better. For most dogs, that's a leisure activity. But for Train, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, it's a calling, it’s a career — and it's helping save endangered animals. Karen Dematteo is Train's trainer and owner. She's a lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis. We reached her in Cobleskill, New York.

CO: Karen, what is the special talent of Train?

KAREN DEMATTEO: So Train is what we call it a conservation canine. He is trained much like a narcotic dog to find particular odors. In our case, he is trained to find nine species in Argentina, five carnivores, and four prey species.

CO: And how does he find them?

KD: With his nose. He is the cheapest. Field assistant I've ever had. He works for a tennis ball. And he he'll find an odour. When he finds it, he's trained on positive reinforcement. And so when he finds it, he knows he's gonna get his tennis ball. And that's what he works for. So he'll do an alert. He'll sit and stare at me, wag his tail, and I'll ask him did you find it? And he'll look back at me like yes, hello, right here. So…

CO: And it being what?

KD: It being the scat so or poop. We call it scat, but it’s called poop from carnivores and prey species. Because with that scat, we can actually track and learn a lot about animals more than sometimes capturing by camera or physically capturing them.

CO: Now if you didn't have Train doing that job of finding that scat or that poop for you, how difficult would it be to find?

KD: You could walk along the road and find certain samples without a problem — like large Jaguars or puma perhaps. But the problem is you wouldn't find all of them, and you'd only find certain species, and you may only find certain individuals. So you may only find the most dominant individuals, only the males, and it could be other species like bush dogs. And a lot of the prey species don't necessarily leave samples on the trail or the roads. So he helps us find many more samples — a variety of samples of different sexes and individuals than we'd ever find ourselves.

CO: What does that enable you to do? What does that do for your research?

KD: So in Argentina, it opened doors because outside a protected areas samples really hadn't been collected before. Camera traps were used in the region, but they're frequently stolen outside of protected areas. So Train allowed us to search private areas, plantations, across a variety of habitats, and understand how animals are moving between protected areas, as well as in areas that are kind of considered not optimal, and understanding whether or not those species can actually use those areas.

CO: You mentioned the camera traps. I mean using a dog in this way does it have a difference on the people who might be living there, or reaction to your research and the search that you're doing?

KD: Yeah, actually, a lot of people are much more open to having a dog walk their property. We say he opens a lot of doors for us because when we go and we say we want to collect samples on these species on your property, and they're like with how are you going to do that? And we’re like well we're going to take this dog, and he's going to sniff out the poop, and then we're gonna collect it. And they're like really? Can we come with you?

CO: how did you find Train?

KD: Train came to me via a group that I worked with in Washington State called Pack Leader Detection Dogs. They do conservation canines like Train. They trained me originally in 2007. And then in 2009, I was looking for two dogs for my project. And they had originally adopted Train for a narcotic class. He failed out of that. He was a little too energetic, which doesn't make him good in a closed search for drugs, but it makes him perfect on you know a long hike cross country.

CO: It's interesting. So even though he is quite energetic, he can be quite focused.

KD: Oh yes, it's amazing he can be like running around and insane, and then you show him a tennis ball or you show him his bell and his harness, and all of a sudden he switches gears, and he's like we're going to work. And he immediately gets this look in his eyes like ok, let's go. And he maintains that energy, but in a much more systematic you know trot along the trail and off the roads and into the forest, versus like running at full speed. So he knows the difference of what he's supposed to be doing.

CO: But if he's tracking mountain lions and these kinds of these kind of carnivores — these big animals — any danger that he gets into trouble?

KD: Luckily, we've only come across what appears to be fresh odour of mountain lions for the most part — mostly in Nebraska, and occasionally in South America. But one of the things we have him do is wear a little bell — like a sheep bell — and that allows animals to know we're coming — so if they're in the area, they can hunker down, or they can take off. And so luckily, we haven't had any problems. And I think it's probably due to the bell that he wears. And also, we're not the quietest people walking through the forest. So you know I'm usually talking to him, and my field assistants are talking to each other, so we're not sneaking through the forest in any way shape or form.

CO: It doesn’t sound like you sneak around very much with Train.

KD: No, no, he is out there, he's got his bell on, he's making his music as he runs through the forest. And I'm always talking to him because he doesn't like to get out of sight from us. So he likes to hear us talking behind him.

CO: Good dog.

KD: Yes. Yes, he is.

CO: But he's 12 years old, right?

KD: Yeah, he's about 12 now is our guess. He worked a long, hard summer last year in Argentina — did great. And this summer, he's scheduled for Nebraska. We're gonna bring a second dog to give him more time off. But, to date, he still tells me he wants to work. So when his body says no more, I'm sure his spirit will say yes, but at some point, his body will say I'm done. So he'll just retire, and get a tennis ball, and do educational demos at that point.

CO: Wonderful! Karen, it’s a great story. Thank you.

In the never-ending series of Marvel movies, he's played by British actor Tom Hiddleston. But in "Avengers Infinity War", Loki dies after uncharacteristically trying to protect Thor. And in that way villains have with audiences, Loki has become a fan favourite — and many are hoping he returns to life when "Avengers: Endgame" hits the screens in late April. The voice, however, of Loki was recruited for an entirely different reason: to help humanity solve a vexing situation. A couple of years ago, the BBC gave Mr. Hiddleston the grand task of making math equations sound alluring, including Pi. JD: On Tuesday, Fair Haven swore in its new mayor. Also, some people swore at her. And, very probably, swore off ever having another mayor like her. It was inevitable that it wouldn't be a straightforward celebration. Ms. Lincoln won the election by a mere three votes, after all. And it seemed like the campaign took a lot out of her: her patient But voters in Fair Haven knew what they were getting. Because, as the old political saying goes, "When you elect a goat to be mayor, she's going to defecate everywhere." You will infer that Ms. Lincoln is a mayor in name only.
