Good Fry-Day: British chef opens up pop-up restaurant, where everything is deep-fried

Deep fried Easter Creme Eggs? Check. Deep fried crumpets? Check. Deep fried leg of lamb? Check! British chef Jim Thomlinson has opened a pop-up restaurant -- just for the week surrounding Easter -- where everything on the menu is deep fried.

Deep fried Easter Creme Eggs? Check. Deep fried cheese balls? Check. Deep fried leg of lamb? Check! British chef Jim Thomlinson has opened a pop-up restaurant in London -- just for the week surrounding Easter -- where everything on the menu is deep fried.

Everything from BabyBels to Wagon Wheels will be available, deep fried. And if you’re really looking for a real family treat, you can reserve for the “Fully-fried Easter,” which features a leg of lamb, roast potatoes, carrots and Brussels sprouts -- all thoroughly battered and bathed in hot oil, of course. “You can’t really recognize it as a roast dinner by the time I’m done with it,” he tells As It Happens host Carol Off.

He even does deep fried pancakes, which sounds odd, given that pancakes are already fried batter. Thomlinson explains: “So once you’ve made the fried batter, you put them into beer batter, so they’ve got an extra layer of crisp all around the outside.”

He acknowledges that most of the food items on the menu -- okay, all of them -- are not very good for your health. He’s not sure how many calories are in, say, a deep-fried hamburger. “I can’t tell you that. But I’d say it’s quite high.”

But he says he’s excited about taking the idea of batter and hitting it out of the park, so to speak. “It’s not just a fish and chips shop that has a Mars bar on the menu,” he says.
