Mathilde Loisel lives a simple life, but she dreams of a life of wealth and status.
When her husband surprises her with tickets to a party hosted by the minister of education, Madame Loisel is disappointed and upset.
"She had no dresses, no jewelry, nothing. And she loved nothing else; she felt herself made for that only. She would so much have liked to please, to be envied, to be seductive and sought after."
Rather than be happy with her modest life, Madame Loisel lives a life beyond her means and soon learns an ironic lesson about superficiality.
