"I'm still number one!" Man gets fired, rehired, after becoming first to buy legal weed in Spokane, Washington
Admittedly, this week has been a bit of a bad trip for Mike Boyer. It started with a simple, but profound, dream. Mr. Boyer wanted to go down in history as the first person to buy legal marijuana in Spokane, Washington.
"This day and age, major history events don't really happen that often." - Mike Boyer
Mr. Boyer left nothing to chance. He camped out overnight and waited a full 19 hours for the dispensary to open.
When the TV cameras showed up, he got out a megaphone and chanted, "What do we want? Marijuana! When do we want it? 2pm!"
It was television gold. When he got home to enjoy his first puff of the product, he flicked on the news to see himself, clad in a tie-dye shirt, chanting enthusiastically, with a bag of weed lifted high above his head.
His employers, a security firm, were less than pleased. Mr. Boyer got a call from his boss, telling him he'd been fired.
"It was kind of a buzzkill," he told one newspaper.
Luckily for Mike Boyer, the bad trip has had a happy ending.
His employers changed their minds.
He tells As It Happens guest host Rick MacInnes-Rae, "They decided they should give me my job back and they even gave me a whole day's pay that I missed."
Mr. Boyer, now gainfully employed, is revelling in the world wide media attention.
"Apparently, I'm more popular than Paris Hilton today."
