It was too expensive to haul away, and the Federal Department of the Environment threatened the town with prosecution when the mayor put the whale up for sale on eBay. Now, high seas have taken the whale off Cape St. George's hands.
Not my problem. Not my council's problem.
Cape St. George's sperm whale is the third to wash ashore in Newfoundland in the past few weeks. The Royal Ontario Museum is taking the town of Trout River's dead blue whale back to Toronto. That operation will cost about $100,000. That's nearly 20 per cent of Cape St. George's budget.
