'We're really finished now': Canadian journalist Kathy Gannon recalls moment of Afghan attack

In April, an Afghan police officer opened fire on Canadian reporter Kathy Gannon and photographer Anja Niedringhaus, both veteran AP journalists on assignment covering the run-up to the Afghan national elections. The nearest hospital was a 45-minute drive away. 

In her first radio interview since the attack, Gannon tells As It Happens host Carol Off she was sure that she and Niedringhaus were going to die before they reached the hospital. "All I kept thinking is 'I want to go peacefully'." 

Tragically, Anja Niedringhaus did not survive the attack. But on Wednesday, her photography is being celebrated at the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression gala in Toronto, where Kathy Gannon will receive a press freedom award. Carol Off chairs the awards steering committee for CJFE, and nominated Gannon for the award.
