A school's decision to change the way it recognizes academic achievement has left a group of Calgary parents fuming. St. Basil Elementary and Junior High school is getting rid of all certificates and ceremonies honouring academic success. The school justified the move by saying: "Awards eventually lose their lustre to students who get them, while often hurting the self-esteem and pride of those who do not receive a certificate." As proof, it cited the work this week's Day 6 guest, Alfie Kohn, who is the author of numerous books, including: "Punished By Rewards" and "No Contest: the Case Against Competition."
