But in recent years that perception has shifted to something more tragic. In 2011, three tough guy players died over a four-month stretch. Derek Boogaard, who was an enforcer for the Minnesota Wild and the New York Rangers, was one of them. He was only 28 when he died of an alcohol and drug overdose while recovering from a concussion.
