Zaki Ibrahim, Fresh Kils remix The Hip's Long Time Running
Zaki Ibrahim has been wowing audiences and critics for over a decade with her extraordinary voice and ambitious sound. Today she joins forces with beat performer Fresh Kils and bandmate Casey MQ to deliver a lush and soulful interpretation of The Tragically Hip's Long time Running.
After weeks of brainstorming, the trio decided on the 1991 tune because it spoke to them as artists.
"This song does this thing where it takes you down a memory lane," Ibrahim tells guest host Piya Chattopadhyay.
In it they heard the story of the "taxing and thankless" journey of an artist. "It's very interesting poetry that takes you there," she says.
"The sum is always greater than its parts."
Their cover is a careful blend of all three artists' different sounds. They interpreted their parts differently but ultimately came together, helped along by the Hip's sturdy songwriting.
"Any version of a good song can be good," says Fresh Kils.
Plus, here's a tidbit of Canadiana from the interview: to "drop a caribou" means to make a phone call.
